George Dobson has outlined the mentality driving Wrexham’s impressive away form as the club prepares to face Preston. The midfielder believes the squad’s fearless approach against top opposition will continue at Deepdale.
Wrexham travel to Preston on the back of an eight-game unbeaten run that has lifted them to 10th in the Championship. They sit just three points outside the playoff positions heading into a crucial December period.
Dobson’s confidence stems from recent results against clubs challenging at the top of the table. The evidence supports his belief that Wrexham can compete anywhere in the division.
Speaking in an interview with Leader Live, the midfielder made his position clear on facing Preston and Hull in upcoming away fixtures. His words reflect a squad that has grown in stature throughout the campaign.
Away performances prove Wrexham belong at Championship level
Wrexham held Middlesbrough to a draw at the Riverside Stadium earlier in their unbeaten sequence. Boro currently sit in the top two, and Phil Parkinson’s side led for large periods of that contest.
The Red Dragons have also beaten Bristol this season, another side pushing for promotion. These results demonstrate the quality within the squad when facing direct rivals.
“As a group we know we’ve got nothing to fear and we’ll be going with a real strong mentality as a group that we’re going there to win the game and hopefully we can do that. We feel like every game we’re going into we’ve got a strong chance of winning if we perform to our maximum and do what we’re good at.”
Dobson’s assessment reflects the confidence building within the dressing room. The midfielder has started every league game in his first Championship season, establishing himself as a key figure in Wrexham’s tactical setup.
That approach has coincided with improved squad cohesion as the season has progressed. Competition for places in midfield has intensified, with Ollie Rathbone among those pushing for selection.

Dobson acknowledged the internal competition that keeps standards high. “The clubs obviously moving at such a fast pace, you’re trying to continually keep your position and continually fight within to have your role in the team,” he explained.
Preston fixture offers chance to extend unbeaten run
Wrexham face Preston at Deepdale before travelling to Hull as part of a demanding festive schedule. Both opponents sit in challenging positions in the table, but neither presents a fixture Dobson fears.
The Red Dragons have already beaten Preston once this season. That victory provides additional confidence heading into Saturday’s match, though the midfielder remains focused on process rather than past results.
“Sometimes you can never dictate a result in terms of there’s other factors that go on, a team could score an unbelievable goal or it could be a refereeing decision that goes against you. But if more times than not your performance is strong, there’s a good chance a positive outcome will come.”
The Christmas period will test squad depth as games arrive every three days. Dobson acknowledged the unique challenge of the festive fixture list with typical understatement.
“It is carnage, obviously. It’s a game every three days for four or five games over a real short period,” he said. “You don’t enjoy your Christmas dinner too much but yeah it’s really enjoyable and knowing that you’ve played Preston twice before the year is out.”
Wrexham’s climb up the Championship table reflects the collective belief Dobson describes. The mentality that delivered results at Middlesbrough and against Coventry will be tested again at Deepdale as the club continues to prove they belong at this level.
