Phil Parkinson has explained why Wrexham allowed Arthur Okonkwo to join Championship rivals Charlton Athletic on a season-long loan in August.
Okonkwo was a central figure in Wrexham’s rise through League Two and League One, but Patterson’s arrival from Sunderland changed the picture. Rather than settle for a place further down the pecking order, the 25-year-old made it clear that regular football was his priority.
Parkinson has now outlined the conversations behind that decision, with the manager making clear how highly he regards a goalkeeper who earned two promotions with the Reds.
Speaking about the goalkeeper’s departure, Parkinson told Border Counties Advisor:
“Arthur has been a really important player for us. I had a couple of good chats with him about how he wants to make sure he is an outright number one.”
He went on to say:
“We brought Patto in and made the decision [he would be first choice]. We always expected there would be some interest in Arthur and he was keen to stay in the Championship.
“He has got a great opportunity to go and be number one at Charlton, and we will be monitoring his progress.”
Anthony Patterson signed for Wrexham from Sunderland on 11 August on a four-year contract running until 2030. Parkinson’s comments leave little ambiguity over the thinking behind the change, with Patterson given the shirt.
That left Okonkwo facing a very different role from the one he had occupied for much of his time at the Racecourse. At 25 and determined to play every week, the opportunity to remain in the Championship provided a logical solution.
Okonkwo gets the first-team football he wanted
Wrexham confirmed Okonkwo’s season-long move to Charlton on 20 August, and he has quickly established himself at The Valley. He started each of their first seven Championship matches following the switch, keeping three clean sheets.
Those opening weeks underline why the move suited all parties. Wrexham have committed to Patterson between the posts, while Okonkwo is getting Championship minutes rather than waiting for another opportunity in North Wales.
There is plenty of history behind Parkinson’s praise, too. Okonkwo first arrived from Arsenal on loan in 2023 and helped Wrexham out of League Two before signing permanently and being part of another promotion from League One the following season.
That contribution forms part of Wrexham’s remarkable climb, even if the goalkeeping hierarchy has now changed. Charlton gives Okonkwo exactly what he asked for: the chance to carry on proving himself as an outright number one.
