Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are marking five years since their Wrexham takeover as the club prepares to face Swansea City in the Championship.
The Hollywood duo completed their purchase of the Welsh side in 2021 and have overseen a remarkable transformation, with Wrexham climbing the English football pyramid while attracting global attention through the Welcome to Wrexham documentary.
Tonight’s Welsh derby against Swansea now provides the latest chapter in that story, and the pair have chosen an unusual way to celebrate the milestone.
Reynolds and McElhenney will step into the commentary box for the match, providing a special alternative broadcast as part of the anniversary celebrations.
Reynolds admitted the pair are approaching the challenge with the same spirit they had when first buying the club.
“As with our decision to take over Wrexham five years ago, we genuinely have no idea how this is going to go, but we will give it our best,” he said.
The actor also joked about their lack of broadcasting experience ahead of the game.
“Neither of us have called a sporting event of any variety, let alone a sport we basically learned the rules of five years ago.”
Reynolds added that fans should not expect neutral commentary from the club’s owners.
“We’ll be two slightly biased commentators,” he joked, adding that broadcasters might want to have the “bleep button ready”.
Despite the light-hearted approach, Reynolds said the pair are looking forward to the occasion at the Racecourse Ground.
“Either way it will be another unpredictable day at the Racecourse and we can’t wait.”
How to listen to Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney commentary
The alternative broadcast, titled ‘Live from Wrexham with Rob & Ryan’, begins at 7:55pm and will be hosted by EFL pundit David Prutton. It has been described as a “first-of-its-kind broadcast”, with Sky Sports promising viewers a unique matchday experience featuring commentary and candid conversations from the club’s Hollywood owners.
Reynolds and McElhenney are also expected to be joined by a number of high-profile guests during coverage of the Welsh derby.
The programme will air exclusively on Sky Sports Football, while the standard match broadcast, featuring traditional commentary from Daniel Mann and Andy Hinchcliffe, will be shown on Sky Sports Main Event from 7:30pm.
