There was no need for anyone to point out how close Wrexham were to maintaining their dream of making it to the Championship play-offs. There was one moment in the last episode of Season 5 of Welcome to Wrexham that was very telling indeed, as the forward reviewed his late chance from the game against Middlesbrough and delivered some harsh truths about himself.
Episode 8, We Go Again, sees the story of Wrexham unfold in a nail-biting conclusion to the Championship season as the players find themselves battling Middlesbrough with a win potentially meaning a play-off spot.
With Hull City and Derby County both vying for the final spots, every chance was significant. Windass was very much involved in many of Wrexham’s best moments in the game, scoring an incredible free-kick to equalize before missing another chance later on.
Windass did not hide from the missed opportunity
It takes us through the important events following the end of the Wrexham’s season, including a last-second chance which could have made all the difference.
Disappointment could be seen on Windass’s face as he saw the chance go by.
“Idiot. Just score.”
It was a short answer, one that captured just how important the outcome was to him.
This particular scene could quite easily have been cut out, but by including it, it allowed some insight into the standards that Windass holds himself to. He did not make any excuses for himself, nor did he blame any external factors, but rather looked inward at what he did.
One admission revealed his mentality
Windass continued talking about how he handles success and failure in football. When asked what went through his mind when watching the video back, he restated his frustration, and then made another interesting statement.
“I find satisfaction hard to come by.”
Maybe that summed him up better than any goals or performances during the year.
Athletes are known for their individual moments, but the documentary brought out the thinking process behind them. Despite having played a major part in helping Wrexham fight for the playoffs at the end of the year, Windass could not stop thinking about the chance he missed.
Early in the episode, he spoke about joining Wrexham for one specific reason.
“When we signed, me and Danielle spoke about it, that’s what I came here to do.”
Promotion had always been the goal, and Windass even stated that he would not want to go down in history as being the player who came to the team when their impressive streak ended.
“These boys have done incredible, and they’ve created a winning culture. I don’t want to be one part of the culture that switches and you start losing.”
That added more significance to his comment about the game against Middlesbrough. While he was frustrated because he had let down his team with a missed opportunity, that was not all to it.
The team could only finish a few points off the play-offs but the story shows how strong the belief within the club is. The fact that Windass admitted to what happened and accepted the criticism from Parkinson shows how high the standards Parkinson has set for the whole team are.
Even if initially, he called himself an “idiot,” his words after that were even more meaningful. Despite the fact that it was one of the most difficult days of the season for him, he knew that the team needed to get back on track.
