Wrexham have secured backing from a sports investment platform worth billions that only funds clubs with genuine elite credentials. Apollo Sports Capital’s minority investment validates the Premier League ambition as serious business rather than Hollywood fantasy.
Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac announced the deal while confirming they retain majority control of the club. Apollo will finance the stadium redevelopment including the new Kop Stand as part of Wrexham’s infrastructure preparations for the top flight.
The investment follows previous backing from the Allyn Family Office in October 2024. Wrexham now sit 12th in the Championship after three consecutive promotions since the Hollywood takeover in 2021.
Apollo only backs clubs with elite potential
Apollo Sports Capital operates as part of Apollo Global Management, which manages $908bn in assets across multiple sectors. The sports investment platform itself is valued at $5bn and specialises in backing clubs and projects with genuine top-flight trajectories.
The platform recently acquired a majority stake in Atletico Madrid, with a deal for 51 to 55 per cent ownership set to complete in the first quarter of 2026. Apollo’s portfolio demonstrates they operate at the highest level of European football with clubs competing in the Champions League.
Apollo has also provided an £80m loan to Premier League side Nottingham Forest, secured against their City Ground stadium. The loan proves Apollo understands the English football pyramid and has established relationships within the Premier League structure.
Lee Solomon, Apollo’s partner and co-portfolio manager, described Wrexham’s situation using language that reflects institutional confidence rather than speculative enthusiasm.
“Wrexham is on an incredible journey, and we are thrilled to be a part of it and to support the Club, the Wrexham community and Rob and Ryan. This is a multi-faceted investment where Apollo Sports Capital can provide long-term, patient capital to help Wrexham reach its goals.”
The emphasis on patient capital separates this investment from short-term opportunism. Investment firms chasing quick returns do not commit to stadium redevelopment projects that take years to deliver financial benefits.
Apollo’s track record demonstrates they only commit resources to clubs capable of sustaining elite competition. Wrexham now join a portfolio that includes some of European football’s most established institutions.
Infrastructure investment proves Premier League planning is real
Apollo’s financing will support the ongoing redevelopment of the STōK Cae Ras, with specific focus on completing the new Kop Stand. The work forms part of the wider Wrexham Gateway Project aimed at regenerating the area around the stadium and supporting the city’s economic future.

Stadium investment reveals the long-term thinking behind Wrexham’s ambition. Clubs reach the Premier League through infrastructure and planning, not through fame or documentary series popularity.
Reynolds and Mac stated their position clearly in the official announcement of Apollo’s involvement.
“From day one, we wanted to build a sustainable future for Wrexham Association Football Club. And to do it with a little heart and humour. The dream has always been to take this club to the Premier League while staying true to the town. Growth like that takes world-class partners who share our vision and ambition, and Apollo absolutely does.”
The owners emphasised that reaching the Premier League requires partners who understand both the sporting ambition and the community responsibility. Growth cannot come at the expense of what makes Wrexham matter to the people who live there.
Apollo’s CEO Al Tylis has worked with Reynolds and Mac previously through their joint investment in Mexican side Club Necaxa. The existing relationship provided confidence that Apollo understands the ownership philosophy beyond just financial returns.
Michael Williamson, Wrexham’s chief executive, confirmed the investment represents confidence in the club’s direction and long-term vision. He stated the partnership would strengthen Wrexham on and off the pitch while building a sustainable future for supporters and the community.
The backing provides the financial foundation to compete at higher levels while maintaining the institutional stability required for sustained success. Five years after Reynolds and Mac outlined their vision, the arrival of elite institutional investors proves the plan was always real.
Apollo’s arrival brings the type of institutional backing that separates credible Premier League projects from speculative ventures. The platform’s portfolio of elite clubs and emphasis on patient capital demonstrates they only invest where genuine top-flight potential exists. Wrexham’s infrastructure focus and three consecutive promotions now carry the validation of investors who understand what reaching the Premier League actually requires.
