Wrexham players showed their appreciation to 2,679 travelling supporters after securing a historic 2-0 victory at Blackburn Rovers on New Year’s Day.
The away end at Ewood Park witnessed scenes of celebration as Phil Parkinson’s side completed a club record three consecutive Championship wins. First half goals from Sam Smith and Ollie Rathbone sealed the three points.
After the final whistle, the squad walked over to acknowledge the vocal support that had backed them throughout the match. The gesture highlighted the strong bond between players and fans during Wrexham’s maiden Championship campaign.
Impressive away following defies New Year timing
The 2,679 supporters made the journey to Lancashire for a 12.30pm kick-off, less than 12 hours after New Year’s Eve celebrations. The early morning departure from north Wales demonstrated the commitment of the travelling contingent.
While it marked the smallest away attendance of the season, the travelling contingent represented one of the highest percentages of Wrexham fans at any away fixture this term. The early start and New Year’s Day timing made the turnout all the more impressive.
The Reds faithful created a vibrant atmosphere throughout the 90 minutes. Their vocal backing provided constant encouragement as Parkinson’s men controlled proceedings at Ewood Park.
Historic victory ends 50-year wait
The result delivered Wrexham’s first win at Ewood Park since May 1974, when Arfon Griffiths and Billy Ashcroft secured a 2-1 victory. It also marked the first occasion the Reds have scored more than once at the venue.
Smith’s opening goal was his 75th in league football and proved to be the first scored anywhere in Europe in 2026. Rathbone doubled the advantage before half-time to give Parkinson’s men a comfortable cushion.
The striker’s finish showcased the clinical edge that has defined Wrexham’s recent form. His movement and composure in front of goal continue to prove vital in the Championship.
Clean sheet ends eight-game wait
The victory was built on a solid defensive display that brought Wrexham’s first clean sheet in eight matches. The back line had not shut out opponents since the 2-0 win over Bristol City in November.
Dan Scarr recorded his first assist for the club, while Liberato Cacace marked his return from injury with his 200th league appearance. George Dobson also reached 75 matches in a Wrexham shirt.
The defensive unit showed improved organisation and discipline throughout. Parkinson’s tactical adjustments have tightened the backline during this winning run.
Play-off push gathers momentum
The three consecutive victories have lifted Wrexham to 10th in the Championship table. The Reds now sit just three points adrift of the play-off positions with the second half of the season ahead.
The winning streak represents uncharted territory for the club at this level, having never previously won three second-tier matches in succession. Parkinson’s side will look to extend that run when they return to action.
The scenes at Ewood Park underlined the unity between squad and supporters as Wrexham continue to defy expectations in their first Championship season. The journey back to north Wales was considerably more enjoyable than the early morning trip south, with fans and players alike savouring a memorable start to 2026.
