In a short TikTok video interview, Steven Fletcher was asked to name his best ever Wrexham five-a-side team, but would he include himself?
The former Scotland striker, who retired from football in September 2025 after leaving Wrexham, made his selections in a TikTok video shared by the club’s official account. Fletcher played a key role in the Red Dragons’ back-to-back promotions from League Two to the Championship, scoring 16 goals across two seasons despite often featuring from the bench.
Fletcher picks Howard over Okonkwo in goal
Starting with his goalkeeper selection, Fletcher apologised to Arthur Okonkwo before naming Howard. He said: “I’m gonna go in goal, super Mark Howard, sorry Arthur, but it’s gonna have to be Chomp.”
Howard provided vital cover during the 2024/25 season when both Okonkwo and Callum Burton were unavailable through injury. The experienced goalkeeper was released by Wrexham in May 2025 alongside Fletcher.
O’Connell gets the nod at the back
In defence, Fletcher selected Eoghan O’Connell, referring to the centre-back by his squad nickname. He explained: “Bonesy at the back. You all know who that is.”
O’Connell was a consistent presence in Wrexham’s defence throughout the promotion campaigns, helping the club maintain one of the strongest defensive records in League One during the 2024/25 season.

Lee and Cannon provide the engine room
For his midfield pairing, Fletcher went with Elliott Lee and Andy Cannon. Describing them as the workhorses of his team, he said: “I’m gonna go Elliott Lee, Andy Cannon, that’s my legs.”
Lee finished as Wrexham’s top scorer in the 2024/25 League One campaign with nine goals in all competitions. Cannon, meanwhile, provided tireless energy in central midfield throughout the promotion-winning season before signing a contract extension in August 2024.
Palmer handed defensive striker role alongside Mullin
Up front, Fletcher selected the iconic strike partnership of Mullin and Palmer, though he gave Palmer a slightly unconventional position. Fletcher revealed that the squad used to joke about Palmer’s impressive work rate off the ball.

Mullin and Palmer scored over 100 goals between them during their time together at Wrexham, forming one of the most prolific partnerships in the club’s recent history. Both strikers departed the Racecourse Ground in 2025, with Mullin joining Wigan Athletic on loan and Palmer signing permanently for Swindon Town.
Fletcher leaves himself out of the team
Despite his crucial contributions to both promotion campaigns, Fletcher notably excluded himself from his five-a-side selection. The 38-year-old joked: “I’m not even in it. I’m terrible. I retired. No one wants me.”
Fletcher joined Wrexham in September 2023 and scored eight goals in each of his two seasons with the club. His ability to come off the bench and deliver important late goals proved decisive on multiple occasions during the promotion campaigns.
The former Sunderland, Wolves and Sheffield Wednesday striker left Wrexham in May 2025, later confirming his departure was “not by choice” despite his desire to remain at the club.
