FX confirms renewal and filming for Season 5
FX officially renewed Welcome to Wrexham for a fifth season in May 2025, confirming the network’s faith in the show’s lasting appeal.
The announcement coincided with Wrexham’s promotion to the Championship after a record-breaking third consecutive rise through the divisions. Production began later that year and was confirmed to be ongoing as of January 2026.
“Rob and Ryan helped Wrexham AFC become one of the greatest sports stories of our time, and what has happened in Wrexham, Wales, is truly magical,” said FX Entertainment President Nick Grad.
The series will once again air on FX in the United States, stream on Hulu, and appear internationally via Disney+. The upcoming season continues the partnership between FX, Disney, and the show’s production teams Maximum Effort, More Better Productions, and Boardwalk Pictures.
Expected release window and streaming platforms
Season 5 is expected to premiere in May 2026, following the same release pattern as previous seasons, which aired soon after the end of the football season. Viewers can expect the series to continue its dual-platform rollout on FX and Hulu, with Disney+ handling the international release.
“As we begin the journey alongside our partners at Disney+ Latin America with Necaxa this summer, everyone is excited to see them bring the same love and support to Mexico that they’ll be bringing to the fifth season of Welcome to Wrexham as the club heads into the Championship,” Grad added.
Wrexham AFC’s debut in the EFL Championship
The upcoming season will chronicle Wrexham AFC’s debut campaign in the Championship, one of the most competitive divisions in football. After three consecutive promotions, Reynolds and McElhenney’s club will now face some of the biggest sides in England in what promises to be a defining chapter of their ownership story.
The series is expected to highlight the balance between sporting success and sustainability as the club steps into a higher financial and competitive bracket. Early production footage reportedly includes behind-the-scenes access to training, recruitment, and match preparation during Wrexham’s first months in the division.
Storylines: cup runs, transfers and new investment
Season 5 is set to feature Wrexham’s historic domestic cup run, which saw the club reach the last 16 of a major competition for the first time since 1978. The storyline will provide one of the season’s emotional anchors as the Red Dragons test themselves against top-tier opposition.

Manager Phil Parkinson told reporters after Wrexham’s third-round victory over Reading, “The one bit of magic dust that hasn’t been sprinkled is a big cup tie against a top team. The law of averages tells me we must be due one this time.”
The season will also explore the club’s ongoing infrastructure projects, including further redevelopment of the Racecourse Ground. Off the pitch, episodes are expected to introduce new minority investors such as the Allyn family, while early 2026 filming captured transfer negotiations aimed at building a Championship-ready squad.
Production team and creative direction
Welcome to Wrexham is executive produced by Rob McElhenney, Ryan Reynolds, Josh Drisko, Bryan Rowland, Jeff Luini, Humphrey Ker, Nick Frenkel, George Dewey, and Andrew Fried. The series is produced by McElhenney’s More Better Productions, Reynolds’ Maximum Effort, 3 Arts Entertainment, and Boardwalk Pictures.
Season 5 will continue the show’s mix of on-pitch drama and heartfelt community storytelling. The Hollywood Reporter described the renewal as “a total no-brainer”, citing its global popularity and the club’s fairytale trajectory. The creative team has promised to maintain the balance between Wrexham’s sporting reality and its broader cultural impact.
Necaxa: the spinoff series expanding the Wrexham universe
Alongside the renewal, FX and Disney+ Latin America announced Necaxa, a bilingual spinoff following Club Necaxa, the Mexican football team co-owned by Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney and Eva Longoria.

The new series, due to premiere in summer 2026, will explore the challenges and dreams of a historic side in Aguascalientes as it fights for a return to glory.
FX described the new series as “a gripping bilingual docuseries chronicling a turbulent, transformational time marked by staff shake-ups, career-defining injuries and the relentless grit of a football team determined to defy expectations.”
Much like Welcome to Wrexham, Necaxa will offer unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to players, coaches and supporters, with Longoria joining as both executive producer and on-screen presence. The series replaces Boardwalk Pictures with Longoria’s Hyphenate Media Group as its main production partner.
What to expect from Season 5
Season 5 of Welcome to Wrexham will bring new tension, higher stakes, and the most ambitious storytelling in the series to date. From a historic cup run to new investment and the challenge of Championship football, the season will capture both the triumphs and the tests facing one of the sport’s most talked-about clubs.
With Reynolds and McElhenney still at the heart of the narrative, the show will continue to highlight the relationship between celebrity ownership and traditional football culture. Expect moments of pressure, humour, and emotion as Wrexham AFC faces its biggest season yet.
Season 4 recap: the promotion that changed everything
Season 4 of Welcome to Wrexham captured one of the most defining moments in the club’s modern history. Across its run, the series followed Wrexham AFC as they battled for a third successive promotion, ultimately securing their place in the Championship for the first time in more than two decades.

The season featured a mix of on-field intensity and personal storytelling, spotlighting figures such as Phil Parkinson, Paul Mullin, and Ollie Palmer alongside long-time staff and supporters. Key episodes showed the emotional highs and lows of the 2024–25 campaign, including the title run-in, the celebrations that followed, and the immediate preparations for a higher level of football.
Off the pitch, Season 4 expanded its focus to the Racecourse Ground redevelopment and the impact of the club’s global rise on the Wrexham community. Viewers also saw how the club continued to champion its women’s team, solidifying its role as a symbol of inclusivity and pride within North Wales. By the finale, Wrexham’s ascent had set the perfect stage for Season 5 — a campaign that promises new tests, bigger stadiums, and even greater expectations.
