Wrexham AFC’s documentary series Welcome to Wrexham has been renewed for even more seasons by FX, with the announcement made on April 10 ahead of the season five premiere in May.
The decision confirms the long-term future of the series, which has followed the club’s progress since the takeover by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds in November 2020.
It arrives at a key stage in Wrexham’s development, with the club now competing in the Championship and pushing towards the Premier League in the closing weeks of the season.
Welcome to Wrexham renewal confirmed by FX
The Disney-owned network has committed to three additional seasons, extending the documentary through to its eighth instalment, which is expected to run until 2029, according to Yahoo.
Season five is scheduled to premiere on May 14 and will continue to follow Wrexham’s progress during their first campaign at Championship level.
“A three-season order for a TV series is nearly unheard of and is only possible through the ground-breaking work of our Emmy-winning documentary team and the relentless rise of Wrexham AFC and all those working so hard to make sports history.
“We are forever grateful to our equally fearless and tireless partners at FX for being with us every step of the way. We are so happy we get to keep telling the Wrexham story for years to come.”
Series continues to track Wrexham’s rise
The documentary has charted Wrexham’s progress since the ownership group completed their takeover in 2020, when the club was competing in the fifth tier of English football.
Since then, Wrexham have secured three consecutive promotions, rising from the National League to the Championship in successive seasons.
The upcoming series will again focus on the club’s on-pitch campaign, with Wrexham currently seventh in the Championship and two points outside the play-off places with five matches remaining.
“When we launched Welcome to Wrexham, we never imagined the impact it would have on the club and the town while creating one of TV’s most successful and beloved docuseries.
“This three-season renewal is a testament to the vision of Rob and Ryan and the enduring connection they’ve built with fans around the world.”
The extended agreement ensures Wrexham’s story will continue to be documented on a global stage as the club approaches a decisive period in its climb through English football.
