Five years on: The signing that changed Wrexham forever as Paul Mullin arrived at the Racecourse

Five years ago, Wrexham made one of the greatest signings in the club's modern history ❤️

Exactly five years ago today, Wrexham pulled off one of the biggest signings in the club’s recent history by signing Paul Mullin from Cambridge United for free.

Signed in early July 2021, Mullin joined the team off the back of 32 goals that saw him named as the top scorer in League Two. His move to the National League instantly indicated the new approach that Wrexham was adopting with Reynolds and Rob Mac at the helm of affairs.

They had no idea how much an influence he would turn out to be.

Over the next five years, Mullin scored 110 goals in 172 appearances as Wrexham secured three successive promotions, climbing from the National League to the Championship. He was named the club’s Player of the Season on three occasions and reached the 100-goal milestone in just 139 appearances, cementing his place among the greatest players in the club’s modern history.

There are many unforgettable moments which the fans remember about Paul Mullin at the club. From his late winner in the clash against Stockport County in 2022 to his brace during promotion to the Football League against Boreham Wood a year later, Mullin had a fantastic relationship with the supporters and his goal celebrations are remembered fondly.

The influence of Mullin extended far beyond football. His popularity made him a real fan favourite, whereas his participation in the projects of Reynolds and Rob Mac, including Deadpool & Wolverine, showed how close his story was connected with the development of the club.

Though his contract with Wrexham expired amicably in June 2026, his legend was already formed. Five years after the signing of the star striker, it remains one of the most memorable dates of the Hollywood era of Wrexham.

There is a difference between scoring goals and changing the course of the club’s history. Paul Mullin did both.
