Jamie Vardy won’t be joining Wrexham after signing for former Premier League rivals

The Jamie Vardy to Wrexham talk is officially over, and there’s quite a twist to his next move 👀

Jamie Vardy won’t be joining Wrexham AFC after the former Leicester City striker signed for Championship rivals Burnley on Sunday, bringing an end to speculation over a move to the Racecourse.

The 39-year-old had been linked with Phil Parkinson’s side after becoming a free agent following his departure from Cremonese, with reports during the transfer window claiming Wrexham had explored a deal for the experienced forward.

Vardy has instead agreed a contract with Burnley until the end of the 2026/27 season, returning to English football with a club relegated from the Premier League last term.

Jamie Vardy signs for Burnley after Wrexham links

Burnley confirmed Vardy’s arrival on Sunday, with the striker joining a Clarets side sitting bottom of the Championship after taking two points from their opening five league games.

Vardy said following the move: “I’m really happy to now be here at Burnley FC. This club has a proper footballing history and passionate fans who deserve a team that represents them and their town.”

“I can’t wait to get going on the pitch and help the team move in the right direction.”

His decision closes the door on a Wrexham move after the Reds were linked with the former England international during the summer. Reports claimed Wrexham made an approach to explore the possibility of bringing him to North Wales, with his free-agent status meaning a deal could still have been completed after the transfer deadline.

Vardy became available following one season in Italy with Cremonese. He scored seven goals in 29 Serie A appearances, but the club finished 18th and were relegated before the striker moved on.

Vardy could immediately face Wrexham

There is an obvious twist to his return to England because Burnley are the next visitors to the Racecourse, facing Wrexham in the Championship on Tuesday night.

Vardy could therefore make his Clarets debut against the club he had been linked with only days earlier. Burnley’s difficult opening to the campaign gives their new striker an immediate job to do, although his record suggests he knows his way around the Championship.

He scored 18 goals in 35 league appearances as Leicester won the second-tier title in 2023/24, adding another promotion to a career most closely associated with the Foxes’ remarkable Premier League triumph in 2015/16.

Vardy also won the FA Cup with Leicester, claimed the Premier League Golden Boot and earned 26 England caps. His move means Parkinson will now prepare to face that experience rather than add it to his attacking options at Wrexham.

Any lingering prospect of Vardy arriving at the Racecourse as a Wrexham player is over, and supporters may instead get their first look at him in Burnley colours on Tuesday night.
