Wrexham can still move for Jamie Vardy even after the summer transfer window closes at 11pm on Tuesday, September 1 because the former Leicester City striker is already a free agent. The 39-year-old has been linked with the Championship club, and his contractual status means the deadline will not necessarily bring an end to the story.
According to Ben Jacobs (on X), Wrexham are one of several clubs to have approached Vardy. The same report adds that he will not be making a decision or signing anywhere on deadline day, making his free-agent status particularly significant for Phil Parkinson’s side.
Vardy has been without a club since leaving Cremonese at the end of the 2025/26 season after one year in Italy. That puts him in a very different position to a player Wrexham would need to buy from another club.
Why the deadline doesn’t stop a Vardy deal
The EFL has confirmed the 2026 summer transfer window closes at 11pm on September 1. Once that point passes, Championship clubs cannot complete ordinary transfers involving players registered elsewhere.
Vardy falls outside that restriction because he was already unattached before the window shut. The EFL’s transfer window rules provide for players who are out of registration, meaning eligible free agents can sign outside the usual window rather than being tied to the deadline.
In short, Wrexham do not need to beat the clock just to agree a contract with Vardy. That is why the story will not necessarily end when the window closes for regular transfer business.
Vardy in no rush to decide
His patience appears intentional. Jacobs reports that the striker is weighing up multiple approaches and will not be making a decision on deadline day.

Wrexham are firmly in the conversation, with WalesOnline also reporting their interest and noting that his free-agent status removes the pressure to finalise anything before 11pm.
There is recent football behind the name, too. Vardy spent last season with Cremonese after joining the Italian club on a one-year agreement with the possibility of a further season.
The EFL catch Wrexham still have to consider
Although Wrexham can potentially sign Vardy outside the window, they still need to comply with EFL squad-list restrictions before registering him for Championship matches. Signing the striker and being able to select him are two separate issues.
The club’s first-team group is already sizeable following another busy summer. Wrexham’s final submitted Championship squad list will therefore determine whether there is a straightforward path to adding another senior player.
That is the crucial detail once the deadline passes. The 11pm cut-off does not automatically prevent Wrexham from signing Vardy, but any deal would still need to satisfy the EFL’s registration rules before Parkinson could select him.
