Wrexham supporters heading to Blackburn Rovers face an unsettled weather outlook after the Met Office issued wind warnings as Storm Austen swept across parts of the UK on Friday. The Reds travel to Ewood Park for a scheduled 3pm Championship kick-off, with another storm threatening further disruption over the weekend.
Storm Austen brought strong winds, power cuts and travel disruption to parts of Britain on Friday. The worst conditions struck the South West and Channel Islands, although weather warnings also covered parts of Wales and northern England.
For those making the journey to Lancashire, the timing of the warnings is particularly important. Friday’s conditions are only part of the picture, with another spell of unsettled weather forecast for Saturday and Sunday.
Met Office warns of more strong winds as Storm Boelo approaches
The Met Office said winds associated with Austen would gradually ease through Friday afternoon and evening. Another area of low pressure was forecast to bring strong winds to northern parts of the UK over the weekend.
That system, named Storm Boelo, has prompted reports of another yellow wind warning from Saturday evening into Sunday. Gusts of 50 to 65mph have been forecast across the wider warning area, although those figures should not be taken as a specific forecast for Blackburn.
The timing could be particularly relevant for supporters returning home after the match. Fans can check the precise warning areas and latest timings through the Met Office’s live weather warning map.
Rail passengers urged to check before travelling
Transport for Wales has already announced precautionary changes to several services ahead of the weekend. The North Wales Coast, Cambrian line, Heart of Wales line and routes in West Wales are among those affected.
Rail replacement buses are planned on certain routes, although no cancellation covering the complete Wrexham-to-Blackburn journey has been confirmed in the information reviewed.
James Gough, customer operations director at Transport for Wales, said:
“Passengers planning to travel on Friday and throughout the weekend are urged to check their journey before travelling, as a combination of forecast severe weather and planned engineering work will affect services across parts of the Wales and Borders network.”
He also advised passengers to allow extra time where possible, something worth bearing in mind for supporters relying on connections to reach Lancashire.
Network Rail has warned that fallen branches, debris and heavy rain can lead to speed restrictions or temporary closures while lines are made safe. That does not mean every service towards Blackburn will be affected, but checking the latest departure information before leaving would be sensible.
What Wrexham fans travelling by road need to know
For supporters driving to Ewood Park, the research has not identified a confirmed storm-related emergency closure specifically affecting the M6, M56, M61, M65, A483 or A55.
Conditions can change, particularly during periods of strong winds and heavy rain. Drivers should consult Traffic Wales and National Highways for current restrictions and incidents before setting off.
Exposed stretches of road can become difficult for high-sided vehicles during strong winds, while fallen branches and surface water may delay traffic. Allowing extra travelling time could prove useful, especially for those making the return journey on Saturday evening.
Wrexham’s trip to Ewood Park remains on the published fixture schedule. Supporters heading across to Blackburn would be wise to keep an eye on the latest forecasts and travel updates, with another unsettled spell following closely behind Storm Austen.
