Harry Ashfield has explained why he left his boyhood club Wrexham for Peterborough United on transfer deadline day, joining the League One side on 1 September 2026 in search of a better opportunity for first-team football.
Wrexham accepted an undisclosed fee for the 20-year-old midfielder, who had been with the club since 2015. Ashfield signed a three-year deal at Peterborough, with the option of a fourth.
It was a major decision for a lifelong Wrexham supporter, but one that makes sense given where he found himself in the pecking order. With Wrexham now playing in the Championship, Ashfield had managed just nine senior appearances and needed the next stage of his development.
Why Ashfield chose Peterborough
Peterborough’s approach to young players was a major factor in Ashfield’s decision. He also spoke to former Wrexham striker Jack Marriott before completing the move.

There is no promise of immediate starts at Peterborough. What Ashfield now has is the chance to compete for League One football rather than relying largely on cup opportunities at Wrexham.
Ashfield struggled for minutes at Wrexham
Ashfield made his Wrexham debut in the EFL Trophy against Crewe Alexandra in October 2023 and went on to make nine competitive appearances, scoring twice. Six of those outings came in the EFL Trophy, two in the EFL Cup and just one in the Championship.
A loan spell at Cheltenham Town in the second half of the 2025-26 season gave him a sustained taste of senior league football. He made 17 League Two appearances, starting nine times and scoring twice.
That spell matters when assessing his decision to leave. Wrexham’s rapid rise through the divisions has raised the standard required to break into Phil Parkinson’s team, and waiting behind established Championship players was not necessarily the best route for Ashfield at this point in his career.
Wales ambitions played a part
Parkinson revealed that Ashfield’s international ambitions were another factor. The midfielder received his first Cymru Under-21 call-up in March 2026, although he remained uncapped at that level when he left Wrexham.

Playing his way into Peterborough’s League One side would give Ashfield another chance to press his case for further international recognition. His move therefore has a clear logic beyond simply finding a new club.
There will be disappointment in seeing a lifelong supporter and academy graduate leave permanently. Wrexham’s rapid progress has changed the landscape for young players, though, and for Ashfield this move offers another route towards turning his potential into a senior career.
