Wrexham fans are already questioning £8m Anthony Patterson gamble, is he better than Okonkwo?

Wrexham spent a club-record £8m on Anthony Patterson and immediately made him their No.1. Three Championship games later, the numbers make for an interesting early assessment. 👀🧤

Anthony Patterson has been a Wrexham player for less than three weeks, but becoming the club’s record signing meant the goalkeeper was never going to have a quiet introduction. The reported £8 million arrival from Sunderland has started all three Championship matches, conceded four goals and is still waiting for his first clean sheet.

That record is enough to put individual moments under scrutiny, particularly after Cardiff City’s late equaliser on his debut. Yet three matches are nowhere near enough evidence to decide whether Wrexham were right to make such a substantial investment in the 26-year-old.

The early numbers are mixed rather than alarming. Patterson has made seven saves across his first three league appearances, and the available statistical data records no errors directly leading to a goal.

Patterson’s price tag changes the level of scrutiny

Wrexham signed Patterson from Sunderland on August 11 in a deal reported to be worth an initial £8 million, potentially rising to £10 million with add-ons. The initial figure was reported as a club record.

That fee inevitably changes the conversation around a goalkeeper. Patterson was not recruited as a low-risk squad option, and Phil Parkinson knew exactly what he was getting after previously handing him his senior Sunderland debut.

“He’s a young keeper with a lot of experience at Championship level, and we look forward to working with him.”

That Championship experience is substantial. Patterson made 169 competitive appearances for Sunderland before joining Wrexham and later spent part of last season on loan at Millwall, where the available figures credit him with six clean sheets in 14 appearances and a save percentage of around 73.9 per cent.

His opening Wrexham numbers are less impressive. Seven saves from 11 shots on target gives him a save percentage of approximately 63.6 per cent, although judging a goalkeeper from such a small sample requires caution.

Watford showed why Wrexham wanted Patterson

The Cardiff game immediately placed Patterson in the spotlight after Rubin Colwill’s late free-kick denied Wrexham victory. His positioning for the goal attracted media scrutiny, with the moment described as a debut blunder.

Five days later came a considerably stronger response. Patterson made five saves as Wrexham drew 1-1 with Watford, accounting for five of his seven league saves so far.

Birmingham then scored twice at the STōK Cae Ras on Friday, but Parkinson’s criticism afterwards was aimed at his team’s defending rather than his goalkeeper. The manager described the two headed goals as among the softest Wrexham have conceded during his time at the club.

“We’ve got to give ourselves a chance and defend the box better than we’ve done tonight.”

That distinction matters. Patterson has not enjoyed the perfect opening to his Wrexham career, but neither does the evidence support making him responsible for a winless start.

Three games cannot decide an £8m transfer

The size of the investment means Patterson will continue to be examined closely. Wrexham did not spend a club-record sum on a goalkeeper without expecting him to make a difference, and supporters are entitled to expect performances matching that ambition.

There is also an important difference between scrutiny and reaching a verdict. Patterson has played only 270 Championship minutes for his new club, behind a defence Parkinson himself has demanded more from.

His start has contained an uncomfortable moment at Cardiff, an excellent five-save display against Watford and a Birmingham defeat in which the manager concentrated his criticism elsewhere.

For an £8 million goalkeeper, the microscope is unavoidable. The judgement should take considerably longer.
