Ben Sheaf targets mini pre season after making first Wrexham start since February

Seven months. Three major injuries. One emotional return 🔴

Ben Sheaf completed an emotional return to Wrexham’s starting line-up after seven months of injury frustration, delivering a calm midfield performance in the victory over Southampton.

The 28-year-old midfielder made his first starting appearance since February during the hard-fought triumph at the STōK Cae Ras. His inclusion provided immediate composure to Phil Parkinson’s side as they secured three vital points in the Championship.

The journey back to competitive action required immense patience following a relentless succession of physical setbacks. Supporters gave the central midfielder a standing ovation as he departed the pitch after an impressive shift.

Seven months of recovery pay off

Sheaf’s absence was prolonged by a complex combination of calf, knee, and shoulder injuries sustained across the calendar year. Managing three distinct rehabilitation programs required rigorous discipline from both the player and the medical department.

Speaking after the match to BBC Sport, Sheaf admitted the emotional weight of stepping back onto the turf was significant after such an extended period on the sidelines. His return marks a crucial milestone in his career following months of solitary gym work.

“It has been a long and difficult road with multiple setbacks along the way. To get back out there with the lads and earn a big result makes every single day of rehab worthwhile.”

Controlled performance steadies Red Dragons midfield

Operating in his preferred central role, Sheaf provided immediate defensive screening and ball retention against high-calibre opposition. He played a controlled 65 minutes, dictating tempo before making way as part of a pre-planned substitution strategy.

His tactical discipline allowed Wrexham to absorb late pressure and preserve their advantage. The performance confirmed that despite his lengthy lay-off, the midfielder retains his sharp vision and positional awareness.

Fixture gap provides vital mini pre season

Wrexham now enter a scheduled gap in their fixture calendar before travelling to face Derby County at Pride Park on 10 October. Sheaf confirmed he intends to utilise the coming weeks as a personal preparation block to rebuild complete match sharpness.

The additional time on the training pitch allows the coaching staff to gradually increase his physical workload without matchday risk. Reaching peak condition during this period will prove vital for the demanding autumn schedule.

Crucial timing amidst squad rotation

Sheaf’s return arrives at a critical juncture for Parkinson’s midfield options following recent medical updates. With fellow midfielder Ollie Rathbone currently sidelined due to ankle ligament damage, Sheaf’s composure restores necessary balance to the squad.

The team continues to adapt effectively while key figures like Sam Smith lead the line in attack. Demonstrating this consistency and structure ensures the Red Dragons remain well positioned as the Championship campaign accelerates.
