Phil Parkinson’s side have enjoyed a breathless start to life in the Championship, but for two players in particular, the three-week international hiatus couldn’t have arrived at a better moment.
While Parkinson dipped into his squad depth by deploying 24 different players across the opening eight league fixtures, only two names were typed onto the team sheet for every single kickoff: loan defender Callum Doyle and summer signing Anthony Patterson.
Doyle, in fact, holds the unique distinction of being the only Red to start all nine competitive fixtures this term. The Manchester City loanee played from the off in Wrexham’s 1-0 League Cup exit at Middlesbrough back in August before seamlessly carrying that workload straight into the league campaign. Goalkeeper Patterson arrived from Sunderland just days after that cup tie on Teesside and hasn’t missed a minute of Championship action since.
A handful of Parkinson’s core senior figures came close to matching that marathon workload. Skipper Dominic Hyam and midfielder Ben Whiteman have both logged eight league appearances via seven starts and one sub outing. Meanwhile, talisman Kieffer Moore and dynamic midfielder Lewis O’Brien have also featured in all eight Championship matches, boasting six starts and two substitute appearances apiece.
Yet while most of the squad got to rest their legs over the break, there was no rest for the weary when it came to Moore. The striker, who currently leads Wrexham’s scoring charts with three goals, headed straight off on international duty with Wales for a taxing Nations League double-header.
Attacker Sam Smith completes the group of six outfield players who have taken part in every single league game so far, albeit with a role balanced between two starts and six appearances off the bench.
Elsewhere in the squad, midfielder Matty James has clocked up seven league outings (four starts, three sub appearances). A cluster of six players have notched six appearances each: Zak Vyner (5+1), Jacques Ekomie (5+1), Danny Imray (5+1), Oliver Rathbone (4+2), Issa Kabore (3+3), and Ryan Longman (1+5).
For Imray and Rathbone, those appearance tallies would likely be higher had injury not struck just before the break. Meanwhile, full-backs Ekomie and Kabore missed early fixtures due to their late-window arrivals at Ceredigion before joining up with Gabon and Burkina Faso respectively during the break.
Forward Josh Windass is gradually working his way back to full sharpness after an injury delayed his start to the season, making five appearances (three starts, two off the bench) so far.
Of the 24 players Parkinson deployed across the opening stretch, one has already departed Ceredigion—attacker Davis Keillor-Dunn made a brief cameo off the bench before sealing a deadline-day loan switch to Sheffield Wednesday.
Finally, backup keeper Danny Ward is still waiting for his first Championship minutes of the campaign. His sole outing came in that opening-day cup defeat at Middlesbrough prior to Patterson’s arrival, though he stayed sharp over the break by starting four matches for Wales in the Nations League.
