Wrexham fans question omissions from Legends shirt as debate sparks over who made the cut

Wrexham's Limited Edition Legends shirt

Wrexham AFC’s Limited Edition Legends shirt has sparked immediate debate among supporters, with fans questioning why Steve Watkin and Gareth Davies were left off a list that includes 13 former players from the 1950s through to the 2010s.

The club announced 13 signatures would feature on the gold-embroidered shirts, including Joey Jones, Mickey Thomas, Arfon Griffiths, Brian Flynn, and Gareth Owen. Each of the 1,864 shirts comes in a numbered presentation box, with £20 from every sale going to the WAFC Former Players Benevolent Fund.

Legends Names

But the selections have divided opinion on social media.

Steve Watkin and Gareth Davies are the notable absentees

Watkin scored the winning goal against Arsenal in Wrexham’s famous 1992 FA Cup third round victory. That 84th-minute strike remains one of the most iconic moments in the club’s history.

“Steve Watkin winner against arsenal,” wrote one supporter on the club’s Facebook post, pointing to the obvious omission.

Gareth Davies made 612 appearances for Wrexham between 1967 and 1983, a club record. He captained the side and had George Best appear at his testimonial in 1979.

“Shame Gareth Davies signature not there,” commented another fan.

Denis Smith’s absence was also questioned, though some supporters acknowledged he was a manager rather than a player for Wrexham. “Think Denis Smith should have been included,” one fan wrote, before adding he assumed the former boss wasn’t included because “He wasn’t a Player for Us.”

The modern era received no representation at all. Andy Morrell’s inclusion, having played in the 2000s and 2010s, is the most recent name on the list.

That’s prompted debate about Paul Mullin’s exclusion. The striker scored 64 goals in two National League seasons and played a central role in Wrexham’s promotion back to the Football League.

“Paul Mullin almost single handedly dragged us out of our non league hell,” argued one supporter. “Morrell had one good season, then abandoned us.”

Others disagreed, suggesting Mullin hasn’t yet earned legend status alongside players who served the club for longer periods.

“Mullin will be remembered with those names,” countered another fan. “Think big den is an odd one.”

The 13 selected legends span six decades

The full list features Joey Jones, Mickey Thomas, Arfon Griffiths, Brian Flynn, Dixie McNeil, Billy Ashcroft, Dennis Lawrence, Gareth Owen, Graham Whittle, Karl Connolly, Mel Sutton, Andy Morrell, and Gary Bennett.

“Great to see Gaz Owen on there,” praised one supporter, highlighting the inclusion of the defender who made over 300 appearances for the club.

The shirt launched today at 4pm GMT, available online and at the Eagles Meadow store. With only 1,864 units matching the club’s founding year, availability will be limited regardless of which names made the cut.

For supporters, the debate over who qualifies as a legend will outlast the shirts themselves.
