Humphrey Ker says Wrexham’s evolution and changing structure have made it harder for him to contribute in the way he would like, with the departing director deciding that now is the right moment to step away from the club.
Wrexham announced on 25 September that Ker would be stepping down from the football club board and as a trustee of the Wrexham AFC Foundation, ending his formal five-year association with the club.
His departure is naturally emotional given everything that has happened since the 2021 takeover. Ker’s explanation, though, suggests this is as much about recognising how Wrexham has changed as it is about saying goodbye.
Humphrey Ker explains Wrexham decision
In the official Wrexham AFC announcement, Ker spoke with considerable pride about his time representing the club and wider community.
“Working for and representing Wrexham AFC and the wider town has been the greatest honour of my life.
“I am proud of the part I have played in the club’s remarkable journey, both on and off the field.
“The way the club has evolved and is now structured has made it progressively harder for me to make a positive contribution so, sad as I am to be leaving, I now feel watching from a distance is the right thing for me.”
That final point is the most revealing part of his farewell. Wrexham in 2026 is a very different operation from the National League club Ker became involved with at the beginning of the ownership project.
The club has climbed three divisions in succession to reach the Championship, while its profile and operation away from the pitch have expanded considerably. Ker’s words indicate that the changing structure has altered where he feels he can contribute most effectively.
A five-year Wrexham journey comes to an end
Ker leaves having occupied an unusual position in Wrexham’s modern story. He was involved before the takeover was completed, became a familiar figure to supporters through Welcome to Wrexham and served on the board during the club’s rapid climb through the divisions.
His importance to the origins of the project was reinforced after his departure Reynolds wrote:
“Without @humphreyker I would not have been introduced to @wrexham_afc.”
Rob Mac described Ker’s contribution as “five years of tireless devotion”, adding that what he had given to the club and community was “impossible to put into words”.
Ker will now watch Wrexham from a distance
There is something significant in Ker’s explanation. His departure comes after the club has evolved from the National League operation he joined into a Championship club with a different structure around it.
Ker also made clear that leaving his formal positions does not mean leaving Wrexham behind, saying he will “always be a fan” and wishing the club, community and supporters every success.
After five extraordinary years, his place in the story is secure. Ker now believes the best way to follow its next chapter is from a little further away.
