Matty James reveals just how close he came to retirement before Wrexham lifeline

Matty James was close to losing the game he loves before Wrexham called. Almost two years later, he has made 80 appearances 🔴🐉

Matty James says he was only a “whisker away” from retirement before Wrexham AFC offered him a lifeline in October 2024, and now, after 80 appearances for the club, he has reflected on how much that opportunity meant.

The 35-year-old joined as a free agent following months of uncertainty, initially signing only until January. Almost two years later, he is still part of Phil Parkinson’s Championship squad and contracted through to the end of the 2026/27 season.

Looking back, James has now revealed just how close he came to having his playing career ended for him.

Matty James was close to an unwanted retirement before Wrexham move

James was released by Bristol City at the end of the 2023/24 season, having made 115 appearances and scored four goals for the Robins. He spent part of the period that followed training with former club Leicester City while searching for another opportunity.

“The reality is, I was only a whisker away from maybe finishing football, which would have been devastating because it wasn’t my own decision.

“That’s something I still remind myself of now. It gives me a little bit of extra motivation every day to keep proving people wrong and keep showing what I can do.”

Those words put his arrival at Wrexham into sharper focus. When his short-term deal was announced on 25 October 2024, James said: “It feels great to be given the opportunity to play again and to join a Club that’s moving in a direction that everybody’s watching.”

Parkinson’s thinking was straightforward at the time. James arrived alongside Jón Daði Böðvarsson, with the manager saying the additions would provide competition and keep his squad strong through to January.

Wrexham opportunity became far more than a short-term deal

James quickly earned Parkinson’s trust and has since reached 80 competitive appearances for Wrexham. What began as a three-month agreement has developed into a stay that is guaranteed until the summer of 2027.

For a player who feared the decision to stop playing could be taken out of his hands, that turnaround still shapes his approach at the Cae Ras.

“That’s why I’m so thankful to this football club. Wrexham has given me another lease of life, really. It’s given me the opportunity to keep playing, to keep enjoying my football and to be part of something special.

“It means the absolute world to me to represent this club.”

James also credits Parkinson for trusting him when he entered a side that was already performing well. His response was to prove the manager right and repay both that faith and the welcome he received from the Wrexham support.

James would be proud to finish his career at Wrexham

The midfielder’s career had already included promotion to the Premier League with Leicester City in 2013/14 before a serious knee injury in May 2015 disrupted his progress. That experience, coupled with the uncertainty he encountered after leaving Bristol City, has given his Wrexham spell added meaning.

“If one day I was able to finish my career at Wrexham, that would be an amazing achievement and something I’d be incredibly proud of.

“Given how close I came to finishing football altogether, to end my playing career at a club that means so much to me would be something special.”

James is still focused firmly on playing. Nearly two years after arriving simply looking for another opportunity, he remains among Parkinson’s Championship options and determined to repay the club that gave him that chance.
