Wrexham CEO Michael Williamson believes new sporting director Steve Nickson can give the club more credibility when trying to sign Premier League-ready players, with his worldwide network opening doors across Europe and the Americas.
Nickson was officially appointed as Wrexham’s first sporting director in September after spending 15 years at Newcastle United, including a lengthy spell overseeing first-team recruitment at St James’ Park.
His arrival represents a significant change to Wrexham’s football operation. Williamson has now explained one of the key advantages he believes the former Newcastle recruitment chief can bring as the club looks to strengthen its squad and build towards its long-term ambitions.
Steve Nickson can give Wrexham more credibility in transfer talks
Speaking to The Athletic, Williamson highlighted the network Nickson has built during his time at the top of English football.
โHe has access to people around the world. He has a rolodex of all the people and names we need to get access to players that are Premier League-ready and better players.โ
Williamson then pointed to specific markets where that network could expand Wrexham’s reach.
โWe are talking about eastern and northern Europe, South America, Central America. He gives us that little bit more credibility when we are having that conversation with some of those players.โ
That international reach is especially important for a club whose recruitment needs have changed quickly during its rise. Wrexham are now operating in the Championship and trying to build a football structure that can eventually support a push towards the Premier League.
Wrexham want to build recruitment structure for next 20 years
Wrexham brought Nickson in to build and lead the club’s scouting and player recruitment operation, while also helping with squad planning and the broader football structure.
Williamson made it clear that the appointment isn’t just about short-term gains. Wrexham are trying to create a recruitment department that will work no matter how far the club climbs.
โBringing in a sporting director and building out a scouting department is the right thing for the football club. Not just for now, but the next 10, 15, 20 years. Again, building something better.โ
Phil Parkinson has also welcomed the experience Nickson brings. The Wrexham manager described his network of knowledge as โreally crucialโ to the club moving forward.
Nickson approach fits what Wrexham want from recruitment
Williamson also explained why Nickson’s methods appealed to Wrexham when they were assessing candidates for the newly-created sporting director position.
Rather than wanting recruitment to be dictated entirely by analytics, the CEO said Wrexham were looking for someone capable of combining data with traditional scouting and detailed checks on a player’s character.
โSteve, with 15 years of experience at Newcastle, is someone who balances data with actually making sure we have eyes on the players and that we have watched them. As well as character references to understand their mentality and who they are.โ
Nickson’s first months at the Racecourse will begin to show how that expanded operation works in practice. Williamson’s comments, though, make the intention clear: Wrexham want access to a wider pool of players, stronger contacts in international markets and greater credibility when approaching footballers capable of playing at a higher level.
