Wrexham AFC have confirmed that midfielder Matty James has signed a new contract with the club, extending his stay at the STōK Cae Ras until the end of the 2026/27 season.
The 34-year-old has been a cornerstone of Phil Parkinson’s squad since joining from Bristol City in October 2024. Having featured in every league game this season, James has played a key role in Wrexham’s Championship campaign and remains the only player to have appeared in every fixture so far.
James says Wrexham ‘means the world’ as he commits future
Speaking after signing his new deal, James said he was thrilled to continue his journey with the club.
“I’m absolutely buzzing to sign a new contract,” he said. “I want to say thank you to all the players, staff and fans for the support I’ve had since the first day I came here. I’m looking forward to playing more football at this great club.”
James joined Wrexham initially on a short-term deal before earning an extension after a series of standout performances.
He has since become one of the team’s most influential figures, contributing goals, assists and experience in equal measure.
“When I first came in, I just wanted to get in the building and play,” he said. “To be part of three straight promotions and now play in the Championship, it’s unbelievable. I want to help take this club to the next level.”
Parkinson hails James’s leadership and experience
Manager Phil Parkinson praised James for his consistency and presence within the squad, highlighting his leadership both on and off the pitch.
“It’s great that Matty has signed another contract with the club,” Parkinson said. “He’s got real leadership qualities both on and off the pitch and I’m delighted that he’s staying with us for another year.”
James has become an integral part of the dressing room, often taking on a mentoring role for younger players. His tactical awareness and professionalism have drawn regular praise from the Wrexham manager and teammates alike.
“It’s part of my life now, part of my family,” James said. “This club gave me a chance when I needed it most, and I’ll keep giving 100 per cent for this football club.”
Veteran midfielder still proving doubters wrong
The former Manchester United and Leicester City player has been open about how his move to Wrexham reignited his passion for football after a difficult spell following his Bristol City departure. He has made 61 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and adding two assists this season, including a long-range strike in the win at Derby County.
“At 34, I feel as fit as ever,” James said. “People looked at my age and maybe doubted me, but I’ve gone out there and shown I can still play at this level. I’ll keep working hard and giving everything for this football club.”
As Wrexham continue to establish themselves in the Championship, James’s experience and commitment provide a strong foundation for the club’s ambitions. His renewed contract ensures the Red Dragons retain a seasoned leader whose influence extends far beyond the pitch.
