Wrexham’s Southampton revenge was perfect response after letting Phil Parkinson down

Wrexham had a point to prove after that nightmare at West Ham, and Southampton were the perfect opponents to make it against. Phil Parkinson wanted a response. He certainly got one. 🔴🐉

Wrexham delivered the response Phil Parkinson needed at the Racecourse, beating Southampton 2-1 just eight days after suffering a bruising 6-0 Championship defeat at West Ham United.

The trip to London had produced the heaviest competitive defeat of Parkinson’s Wrexham tenure, and the club’s worst overall loss since Bournemouth in 2004. Parkinson took his share of the blame afterwards, describing it as a very tough night and admitting he needed to reflect on what he could have done differently.

That meant the Southampton fixture was about more than just picking up another three points. Wrexham needed to look like themselves again, and the reception Parkinson received from the Racecourse crowd set the tone before his players responded on the pitch.

Wrexham give Parkinson the answer he wanted

Wrexham started with purpose and Kieffer Moore put them ahead from Ben Whiteman’s corner, heading home his third Championship goal of the season. It was exactly the sort of committed, no-nonsense response needed after the problems at West Ham.

Southampton still carried plenty of threat. They finished with 67 per cent possession and 15 attempts to Wrexham’s five, and James Ward-Prowse brought them level after the interval.

The difference from the previous week was Wrexham’s ability to stay in the contest. Moore almost produced an extraordinary second with an effort from around halfway, before the game moved towards its decisive late moment.

Kieffer Moore and Jacques Ekomié make the difference

Moore had already shown his quality, but Jacques Ekomié supplied the telling contribution in the closing stages. His forceful delivery across goal left Keven Schlotterbeck trying to intervene, with the Southampton defender putting through his own net in the 89th minute.

It was hardly a victory built on controlling the ball for long spells. Instead, Wrexham competed, absorbed difficult periods and took their opportunities, qualities that had been painfully absent during the six-goal defeat in London.

Moore’s contribution mattered too. Three Championship goals by that stage of the campaign underlined the threat he offers Parkinson, and his display against Southampton gave the visitors another problem whenever Wrexham could get service into him.

Southampton win changes the mood before the break

The backdrop added another edge. Southampton had been removed from the previous season’s Championship play-offs following their spying case and began 2026/27 with a four-point deduction, giving the meeting extra history before a ball was kicked.

For Wrexham, though, the more immediate concern was their own reaction. Parkinson spoke afterwards about the lift his side needed following a difficult week and acknowledged the backing he and the players had received inside the Racecourse.

That response carries more weight because of what he had said at West Ham. Rather than ducking responsibility after the heaviest competitive loss of his Wrexham tenure, Parkinson had accepted that the performance required scrutiny, and eight days later his team produced something much closer to the standards established under him.

The West Ham result cannot be erased, nor does one victory make it irrelevant. But Wrexham were given an immediate chance to answer a miserable night, and against Southampton they took it.
