Wrexham AFC have moved a step closer to an 18,000-plus Racecourse Ground after Wrexham County Borough Council’s Planning Committee approved plans for up to 2,250 additional seats in the new Kop Stand on Monday, October 5.
The decision means the Kop can eventually accommodate up to 7,750 supporters, adding a potential second tier to the 5,500 seats already approved by the Planning Committee in March 2025.
Wrexham say that would take the Racecourse Ground’s overall capacity to just over 18,000, giving the club considerably more room to meet strong demand for home tickets while remaining at their historic home.
Wrexham can increase new Kop to 7,750 seats
The club initially submitted its application for the additional 2,250 seats on July 30, 2025. According to Wrexham AFC, the extra capacity forms a second tier within the approved design and footprint of the new stand.
That takes the potential Kop capacity well beyond the 5,500 approved on March 3, 2025. For supporters who have seen demand for tickets grow alongside Wrexham’s rise, the prospect of thousands more seats represents a substantial change to the matchday picture.
The club also believes increased capacity can accommodate the international supporters visiting Wrexham, with the wider local economy forming part of its case for expansion.
Racecourse history remains part of Wrexham’s thinking
The bigger Kop is not solely about Championship crowds. Wrexham want the Racecourse to remain capable of staging international football, preserving a connection stretching back to Wales facing Scotland at the ground in 1877.
Guinness World Records recognises the Racecourse as the oldest international football ground still in use. Its most recent senior Wales fixture came in April 2024, when the women’s national team beat Croatia 4-0 in European Championship qualifying.

The FAW has also discussed bringing more international football to Wrexham. Increasing the Kop to 7,750 would give the Racecourse greater capacity to maintain that role as the stadium develops.
Extra capacity brings a matchday transport challenge
Thousands of additional seats also mean more supporters travelling into the area, making transport an important part of the planning process. Wrexham submitted an updated Travel Plan alongside their application as the impact on surrounding roads and residential areas was considered.
The club has committed to promoting public transport across its channels, including bus and rail, with continued liaison involving local operators and Transport for Wales. Existing park and ride schemes will remain part of the approach, alongside free matchday parking at Eagles Meadow.
Planning approval does not mean all 7,750 Kop seats will appear immediately, but it establishes how far Wrexham can take the new stand. An 18,000-plus Racecourse would represent another considerable change to the club’s home, without losing sight of the history that makes the ground unique.
