Natasha Thomas comes to Wrexham as a player with arguably the best scoring form in the whole of British football, but Jenny Sugarman has not just brought a proven goalscorer. With the experience of the Jamaica international and her pace, Wrexham are well placed to have their biggest campaign ever.
Natasha Thomas joins Wrexham from a club in which she has spent 11 years and is the record appearance maker and the all-time leading scorer of the club.
Thomas’s first interview with Wrexham has been very insightful. She talked about pace, trust, silverware, Jamaica, and the chance of competing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
1. She changes the space Wrexham can attack
Wrexham Women already have technical quality, but Thomas offers something different.
Her willingness to run beyond defenders can force opponents deeper. That creates space for midfielders and gives Wrexham more variety in attack.
“I think for me, it’s obviously I’m 30, so I can bring that with abundance. I play at international level. I think I can bring that here. I’m quite a fast player. I like to score goals, so hopefully I can help with that story and do that at Wrexham.”
2. Her goalscoring record removes guesswork
With her ability to sprint past defenders, her ability to push her opponents back means that it makes room for her teammates and offers the side greater attacking options.
All transfers come with some risk, but that isn’t the case for Thomas as she has already scored 175 goals in 260 games for Ipswich.
This averages out at just under 0.67 goals per game over ten years of play. It’s her consistent form, not a brief period of good performance.
3. Europe should not feel unfamiliar
It may be the first Champions League season for Wrexham, but the same cannot be said for Thomas as she hasn’t taken part in the tournament before either.
“It’s been amazing, to be honest. I never thought I’d be playing for my nation, Jamaica, but when I got the call-up, it was against France. I wasn’t expecting to get on the pitch at all, but I made my debut there. And ever since, I’ve been getting called up to every camp.”
Clwb Pêl-droed also pointed to Wrexham’s Champions League campaign as part of the context behind her arrival.
4. She strengthens the dressing room
Thomas spent 11 years at Ipswich. Players do not become record appearance makers without consistency and professionalism.
Her comments about Sugarman were revealing too.
“No, she’s a really good person. And for me, it was how comfortable she made me feel when I came over here. It wasn’t any pushing, oh, please come here, like pushing me to come here. It was genuineness.”
That says plenty about Sugarman. Experienced players join environments they trust.
5. She already shares Wrexham’s ambition
Thomas kept returning to one theme in her first interview. She wants the next challenge.
“I think I’ve been looking at Wrexham previously anyway. We were obviously winning last year. I think that was a big thing for me as well. I always like to win silverware and things, and I think I can do that here with the club.”
The Champions League was another major factor.
“I’ve never played in the Champions League and that was definitely a little cherry on top as well to why I did sign here as well because I think I can help with that, help support the team, push on and get as far as we can.”
Thomas comes as an experienced goal-scoring machine, but her interview reveals that she could be a treasure trove for Wrexham. She has the look of a player with the mentality they are trying to build at Sugarman.
