Wrexham’s push for a Championship play-off place is increasingly being driven by their defensive unit, with Arthur Okonkwo, Max Cleworth and Callum Doyle all playing crucial roles in recent weeks.
Phil Parkinson’s side have found greater stability at the back as the season has progressed, with goalkeeper Okonkwo already keeping 11 clean sheets in the Championship this season.
But Wrexham’s defence has not only been important in stopping goals. It has also begun to play a decisive role at the other end of the pitch.
Arthur Okonkwo providing reliability in goal
Okonkwo has been one of the most consistent performers in the Wrexham squad this season.
The goalkeeper has made more than 88 saves across the Championship campaign and has kept 10 clean league sheets (11 for the season), including an impressive shutout in the recent 2-0 Welsh derby victory over Swansea City.

His presence between the posts has given Wrexham a solid foundation, particularly in tight matches where big saves have helped secure valuable points.
Doyle turning defence into attack
In front of Okonkwo, Wrexham’s back line has also started to contribute heavily in attacking areas, with Callum Doyle becoming one of the team’s most influential players.
The defender has recorded two goals and three assists in Wrexham’s last five Championship matches, highlighting how important he has become in both phases of play.
Doyle’s ability to step forward from defence and deliver quality passes into attacking areas has given Wrexham an additional creative outlet during the run-in.
Operating as the left-sided centre-back in Parkinson’s back-three system, the former Manchester City defender frequently progresses the ball forward and helps launch attacking moves from deep.
Cleworth adding defensive leadership
Alongside Doyle, Max Cleworth has continued to provide defensive reliability.
The centre-back has been one of Wrexham’s most dependable performers this season, recording more than 40 successful tackles and over 30 interceptions across the Championship campaign according to FBref team statistics.
His physical presence and aerial ability have helped anchor the defence, allowing Wrexham’s system to function effectively at both ends of the pitch.
Defence becoming foundation of play-off push
While Wrexham have often been praised for their attacking football, the recent form of their defensive unit could prove just as important in the race for the play-offs.
The club currently sit inside the Championship’s top six and remain firmly in contention for promotion as the season enters its final stretch, according to the latest Championship standings.
With Okonkwo providing consistency in goal and defenders like Doyle now contributing goals and assists, Wrexham have developed a defensive structure capable of influencing matches at both ends of the pitch.
If that balance continues in the final weeks of the season, Parkinson’s side may find their defence becomes the platform for a successful play-off push.
