Wrexham co-owners Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds revisited one of their earliest moments of doubt on Friday, June 6, when FX Networks shared a light-hearted Welcome to Wrexham interview clip on TikTok.
The exchange takes supporters back to episode one of season one, when the pair were shown on the pitch asking whether the whole project would actually work.
It lands differently now. Wrexham are no longer a National League club with Hollywood ambition, but a Championship side still carrying the same ownership story through Welcome to Wrexham season five.
The new FX Networks clip is simple, but it says plenty about the early mood. The interviewer reminded Rob and Reynolds of the scene where both men said: “f**k that.” Watch the full interview below 👇
Rob Mac admits the line was not quite as certain as it sounded
Rob gave the best explanation first. He said the famous moment was not necessarily a statement of total confidence.
“You know, I think that was both of us trying to convince each other.”
That is what makes the clip work. It is funny because every Wrexham supporter now knows what followed, but the owners were still feeling their way through the scale of the decision.
Rob then added the line that gives the whole exchange its charm.
“It was more of a question. Like, ‘fuck that’, as in no way, right? Rather than a ‘fuck that’.”
For a club now guided by Phil Parkinson in the Championship, it is a reminder of how strange those first steps must have felt.
Ryan Reynolds remembers the Premier League ambition being laughed at
Reynolds agreed with Rob’s reading of the moment. His first reaction was just as honest.
“Yeah, what did we get ourselves into?”
He then turned the joke into something more revealing. Reynolds said that when you say “f**k that, it’s gonna work”, you are not necessarily thinking the club will be “knocking on the door of the Premier League in five years.”
That is where the Wrexham context matters. In October 2021, Rob said “The goal is to take Wrexham to the Premier League”, with Sky Sports also carrying Reynolds’ line that “the sky’s the limit.”
Reynolds now understands why that sounded far-fetched. He said he remembered both owners saying at the initial press conference that if their course held, it would take the Racecourse to the Premier League.
“And they laughed. There are a couple of players there that laughed.”
There is no bitterness in the line. There is only the benefit of hindsight, and perhaps a little appreciation for how unrealistic it must have sounded at the time.
Wrexham can enjoy the joke because the work has backed it up
The best part of the interview is that it does not rewrite the past. Rob and Reynolds do not pretend the plan always felt simple.
They sound like two owners who remember the risk clearly. They also know that the club’s rise has changed how supporters hear those old words from Ryan Reynolds.
The wider journey has now reached the Championship table, which makes the Premier League line feel less like a throwaway ambition and more like part of the club’s modern story.
That is why the clip works so well. It is light, self-aware and very Wrexham, because the punchline is not just what they said, but how far the club has travelled since.
