Wrexham set for welcome FIFA payment after Hyam and Cacace World Cup duty

Two Wrexham players at a World Cup and a FIFA payment on the way. Not bad at all πŸ”΄
Andrew Pargh July 2, 2026 (Last updated: July 2, 2026)

Wrexham AFC are set to receive an estimated FIFA World Cup compensation payment after Dom Hyam represented Scotland and Liberato Cacace represented New Zealand at the 2026 World Cup.

FIFA have not yet confirmed the final figure but are likely to be similar to what was previously paid at the 2022 World Cup. The revenue comes through FIFA’s Club Benefits Programme where clubs are paid for each player, per day, while that player is released for World Cup duty.

Wrexham payment explained

Wrexham released two players for the tournament, with Hyam involved for Scotland and Cacace involved with New Zealand.

Clubs are expected to receive around $5,000 per player, per day, although FIFA will confirm the exact payout after the tournament. On that estimate, Hyam’s 21-day period away would be worth around $105,000. Cacace’s 22-day period would be worth around $110,000.

That gives Wrexham an estimated total of $215,000. It is not a transformational sum at Championship level, but it is still welcome income linked to the club’s growing international profile.

FIFA programme gives wider context

FIFA has confirmed a $355 million Club Benefits Programme for the 2026 cycle, with $250 million allocated to the final tournament.

The estimated daily rate is lower than the $10,950 per player, per day paid at the 2022 World Cup. The 2026 tournament has expanded from 32 teams to 48 teams.

The programme has also changed in scope. FIFA now compensates clubs involved during the two-year qualification period, as well as clubs who release players for the finals.

Hyam and Cacace return to Wrexham focus

Dom Hyam was an unused substitute during Scotland’s group-stage campaign. Scotland finished third in Group C and failed to reach the knockout stage.

Liberato Cacace started all three of New Zealand’s group matches. New Zealand finished bottom of Group G with one point. Cacace started at left-back and played 69 minutes in New Zealand’s 2-2 draw with Iran.

The two defenders now return to a Wrexham squad preparing for a demanding summer. That is the part Phil Parkinson will care about most.

Pre-season timing works for Wrexham

Hyam joined Wrexham from Blackburn Rovers on an initial two-year contract in September 2025. Cacace is also under contract at Wrexham, with his current deal running until June 2028.

Wrexham’s pre-season schedule begins with Wisla Krakow on Saturday, 11 July. That gives both players time to rejoin the group after their international commitments.

Hyam and Cacace gave Wrexham rare representation at World Cup level. The payment is the financial consequence, but the wider point is just as clear.

Wrexham have players wanted on major international stages. The club should soon receive a useful payment for that, and Parkinson should still have both defenders back before the serious pre-season work begins.
