Wrexham Set to Rewrite the History Books with Record-Breaking London Stadium Trip

History beckons for Wrexham AFC this Friday night
Wrexham Reds September 10, 2026 (Last updated: September 10, 2026)

History beckons for Wrexham this Friday night. The Hollywood era has delivered countless unforgettable moments since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took the reins in February 2021, but this week, the Red Dragons are about to shatter a record that has stood firm for over half a century.

When Phil Parkinson’s men step out onto the pitch at the London Stadium to face West Ham United, they will do so in front of the largest competitive crowd in Wrexham’s 162-year history.

Shattering a 56-Year Milestone

For fifty-six years, Wrexham’s record for the highest attended competitive match came from a legendary FA Cup clash against Liverpool at Anfield back in 1970. That day, 54,096 fans packed into the stands. Over the decades, the club has come close to matching that figure during iconic cup runs and playoff finals—such as the 1969 trip to Manchester United (48,315), the 2022 FA Trophy final at Wembley (46,111), and an away day at Everton in 1980 (44,830).

However, the Anfield record has always remained out of reach. Until now.

With West Ham consistently pulling in massive crowds this season—including a massive 62,264 gate against Charlton Athletic—and boasting a stadium capacity well over 60,000, Friday’s Championship fixture will comfortably eclipse the 1970 milestone.

The Phenomenon of the Hollywood Era

This historic milestone is a stark reminder of just how far the club has traveled in such a short space of time. Just a few seasons ago, Wrexham was fighting to get out of non-league football.

Today, fueled by global attention from the Welcome to Wrexham docuseries and a rapidly expanding international fanbase, the Red Dragons regularly find themselves rubbing shoulders with English football’s elite in some of the largest sporting venues in the country. What once felt like a rare, once-in-a-generation giant-killing occasion is fast becoming the club’s new normal.

Focus Shifts to the Pitch

While the fans are rightly celebrating the sheer scale of the occasion, the mood inside the dressing room remains firmly focused on business.

Speaking ahead of the match, Wrexham midfielder Matty James acknowledged the magnitude of the event but stressed that the team cannot get distracted by the spectacle. Having played at the London Stadium before, James described the trip as a “great opportunity” for the squad to test themselves on one of the Championship’s grandest stages. However, he insisted that securing a result is all that matters.

Parkinson’s side heads to London in fine form, carrying a six-match unbeaten league streak into the capital. While four of those games have ended in draws, the resilience shown by the squad proves they belong at this level. Walking out in front of 60,000 people will be the ultimate litmus test for this evolving team, but it is exactly the kind of stage this club was rebuilt for.

History will be made the second the whistle blows on Friday night—now it is up to the boys in red to make sure the scoreline matches the greatness of the occasion.
