Wrexham’s plans to expand the Kop Stand at the Racecourse Ground remain active in June 2026 after the club’s transport consultant rejected criticism from Wrexham Council over parking evidence submitted as part of the application process. The disagreement centres on the proposed expansion of the stand and ongoing discussions surrounding transport arrangements at the stadium in Wrexham.
While the planning application remains under consideration, there is currently no date set for a decision from the council.
The latest development comes as Wrexham continue work towards a larger and modernised stadium, a project viewed as a major part of the club’s long-term future.
Supporters have already seen significant changes at the ground in recent years, with the wider vision for the stadium outlined in Kop redevelopment plans.
Buro Happold challenges council assessment
According to Wrexham.com, transport consultant Buro Happold has formally responded to criticism from the council’s highways department regarding parking evidence submitted in support of application P/2025/0594.
The firm said it “strongly disagree[s]” with the council’s position and described the criticism as “a misrepresentation of the report’s purpose”.
“We strongly disagree” with the council’s position and consider it “a misrepresentation of the report’s purpose”.
The consultants also stated that Wrexham AFC commissioned extensive parking surveys in February 2026 at a cost exceeding £40,000 before presenting the findings to council officers in March.
The response argues that a requirement for further cumulative assessment was only formalised weeks later and questions whether the additional work now being requested is typically required on comparable stadium projects.
Why Wrexham believe progress can continue
The club’s position is supported by evidence that sold-out fixtures have continued to be managed since approval of the original Kop plans in 2023.
Buro Happold noted that transport arrangements have operated during high-attendance matches, including FA Cup fixtures and events involving the temporary stand currently in use at the Racecourse.
The consultants also confirmed they are updating the club’s travel strategy with a focus on encouraging more sustainable journeys to matches. Wider transport planning remains linked to regeneration work around the city and the stadium.
Further context on the ground’s future development can be found in this Racecourse Stadium guide.
The ongoing discussions arrive as Wrexham continue preparations for life in the Championship under Phil Parkinson, with long-term infrastructure viewed as a key part of the club’s ambitions.
Transport planning remains a significant part of the process. The wider context around parking demand and transport mitigation has previously been outlined by BBC.
For now, the application remains live. Wrexham and their consultants say they welcome the opportunity to agree what they describe as a clear and proportionate framework that can help move the Kop expansion towards a final determination.
