Wrexham have agreed terms with Fiorentina on the signing of center-back Matias Moreno, with the Italian club to get approximately £7.25 million while retaining a sell-on clause of 50 per cent.
It marks an important breakthrough in Wrexham’s recruitment activities in the current summer window. Moreno will still need to approve the deal to make the move official.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Wrexham have agreed on a deal worth €8.5 million. That is about £7.25 million, although the exact amount will fluctuate due to currency exchange rates.
The move comes as Wrexham continue their efforts in signing players as part of their preparations ahead of the new Championship season. At the time of writing, Wrexham AFC have not officially announced Moreno as a signing.
Wrexham agree deal with Fiorentina
Fiorentina would receive an initial payment while also retain a 50% sell-on clause. Whether the percentage relates to the overall price of any future transfer or just Wrexham’s profits is not clear.
The deal demonstrates that the clubs owners are prepared to bring players in who have experience playing in major European leagues like La Liga and Serie A.
Moreno brings recent La Liga experience
Moreno is a 22-year-old Argentine central defender who stands 1.93 metres tall. He is right-footed and has been contracted until June 2029 at Fiorentina.
During last season, Moreno played on a loan for Levante where he was involved in 28 La Liga games and made 33 tackles, 37 interceptions, and 130 clearances.
Last season ensured that Moreno got a taste of senior football due to lack of playing time at Fiorentina.
Moreno praised confidence while talking about his Spanish stint.
“In places where they place a lot of trust in me, that is what suits me best and helps me raise my level.”
He made those comments in a January interview with Levante UD.
The deal between Wrexham and Fiorentina is far from being completed. Moreno needs to give his consent before things can progress any further.
