According to former Manchester United forward Dwight Yorke, Wrexham are amongst the three Championship teams which stand a chance of securing promotion to the Premier League this year. According to Yorke, the Championship this year is less predictable than most people envisage.
Wrexham, managed by Phil Parkinson, barely missed out on play-off spots having been ranked seventh in last season’s standings. Yorke believes that there is no reason why they cannot repeat a similar feat. Besides Wrexham, Yorke names Birmingham City and Blackburn Rovers as teams which could surprise everyone this season.
In a chat with sports betting website BOYLE Sports, Yorke conceded that the likes of West Ham United, Wolves and Burnley, who have all come down from the Premier League, will be the focus of most people’s attentions owing to their financial muscle. Nevertheless, Yorke argues that history has shown time and again that well organized and well-managed teams have made it into the top flight.

“The Championship is always open for anyone to come and win it.
“Everybody has a genuine chance from top to bottom, whether it’s the teams that are favourites with the bigger budgets or the teams that surprise you.
“They defied the odds last year under Frank Lampard and anybody in this league with a decent squad and a good manager can get themselves promoted. It doesn’t matter what the predictions say about them before the season kicks off.”
According to Yorke, mentality is what makes the teams that are not part of the pre-season favorites feel good about themselves, considering the quality of players in the league.
“Anyone can get promoted so why can’t Wrexham or Birmingham City or Blackburn Rovers go out there and do it this season?
“Wrexham have never made it to the Premier League but Birmingham and Blackburn have played in the top flight before so why would you not go into the season thinking you can get back up there?”
According to Yorke, who is a former Trinidad and Tobago international, mentality, organization, and strong management are as crucial as money in one of the toughest football leagues in the world.
However, the optimism shown by Yorke is not shared by his former Manchester United colleague, Mikael Silvestre, who recently opined that Wrexham may have peaked already and wondered whether they will ever make an impression in the Premier League.
Yorke believes there is nothing that stops Wrexham from continuing their upward trajectory in the league.
