Wrexham’s 2-1 defeat to Birmingham City at the STōK Cae Ras on Friday extended their winless Championship start to three matches and exposed two areas still in need of attention before the transfer window closes on Tuesday night.
Late-window arrivals Jacques Ekomié and Issa Kaboré have already helped address problems at wing-back, with George Thomason sidelined and Liberato Cacace still unavailable. Friday’s performance suggested there is more work to do elsewhere.
Asked after the defeat whether Wrexham could still be active before the deadline, Phil Parkinson kept his answer short: “Possibly.”
Lack of creativity remains an issue
Despite enjoying 61 per cent possession against Birmingham, Wrexham managed only eight shots and four on target. Their only goal came from defender Callum Doyle.
The first half was particularly flat. Parkinson felt his side lacked conviction in the final third and were waiting for somebody else to make something happen.
“In the first half we didn’t play with enough conviction, belief in the final third. We looked like a team of players who were waiting for somebody else to do something rather than taking responsibility.”
That criticism is backed up by the early-season numbers. Wrexham registered 18 shots in the 1-1 draw at Cardiff City, 12 against Watford and only eight against Birmingham.
Josh Windass returning from injury gives Parkinson another player capable of operating between the lines, but current reporting indicates Wrexham are still interested in adding a No.10 or another creative attacking player.
Based on Friday’s showing, it is easy to understand why. Plenty of possession counted for little when Wrexham reached the final third.
Defensive frailties were also exposed
Phil Neumann’s two headers for Birmingham highlighted the other concern. Parkinson described them as among the softest goals Wrexham have conceded during his time as manager.
“We’ve got to give ourselves a chance and defend the box better than we’ve done tonight.”
Dominic Hyam, Zak Vyner and Doyle formed the back three, with Max Cleworth and Dan Scarr available from the bench. This is not simply about adding another body.
Current reporting indicates another centre-half remains on Wrexham’s agenda. Birmingham twice punishing poor defending inside the box only strengthened the argument for another option there.
That does not mean the existing defenders should shoulder the blame for Wrexham’s entire start. Parkinson’s side have two points from three games and the squad has already undergone considerable change during August.
Finding the right fit remains the challenge
The task now is finding genuine upgrades rather than making signings for the sake of it. Wrexham’s recruitment approach has centred on quality over quantity, and Parkinson has previously acknowledged there are no guarantees the right deals can be completed.
That is also why some of the more extravagant names appearing in transfer speculation should be treated cautiously. The strongest current reporting concerns positions rather than individual targets: another centre-half and an attacking player capable of giving Wrexham more invention around the penalty area.
Friday provided a timely reminder of why both would be useful. Wrexham were too easy to punish at one end and struggled to turn possession into meaningful pressure at the other.
The window closes at 11pm on Tuesday. Birmingham may have given Parkinson one final piece of evidence about where Wrexham’s remaining business should be focused.
