Paul Mullin returned to the Racecourse Ground in October 2026 and looked back on his time at Wrexham AFC, highlighting one unforgettable night that still stands out above the rest.
The former Reds striker was in North Wales to watch Phil Parkinson’s side take on West Bromwich Albion in the Championship. The visitors won 2-1, but for Mullin, it was a chance to revisit a ground where he had enjoyed some of the best moments of his career.
He joined Wrexham from Cambridge United in the summer of 2021 and quickly established himself during the club’s remarkable rise through the divisions. His goals brought plenty of memorable afternoons and evenings, although his favourite recollection is about much more than finding the net.
The night Mullin will never forget
Speaking during his return, Mullin picked out Wrexham’s 3-1 victory against Boreham Wood on 22 April 2023, the win that secured the National League title and ended 15 years outside the Football League. It was an evening when the Racecourse crowd could finally celebrate the promotion that had eluded the club for so long.
As covered by Leader Live, Mullin said:
“I’ve got too many (favourite memories) to name but obviously the Boreham Wood game and seeing the emotion on people’s faces after it.”
He added: “To be able to give them that joy of something they’ve really wished for for a long time was probably the one that will never be beaten.”
Those words explain why the occasion has stayed with him. It was not simply the importance of the result or his own contribution, but the sight of supporters experiencing something many had spent years waiting to see.
Two goals that helped end 15 years of waiting
Wrexham did not start well against Boreham Wood. Lee Ndlovu put the visitors ahead inside the opening minute, leaving Parkinson’s players with an early setback to overcome on an evening filled with expectation.
Elliott Lee equalised in the 15th minute before Mullin took over in the second half. The striker scored in the 52nd and 71st minutes to complete the comeback and put the title beyond doubt.
The brace was typical of his contribution that season. Mullin scored 38 National League goals in 2022/23, giving Wrexham a reliable cutting edge throughout a demanding title race.
The numbers behind the collective achievement were just as striking. Wrexham finished the season with 111 points, 34 wins and 116 goals.
Yet Mullin’s choice of favourite memory puts those figures into perspective. The goals helped deliver promotion, but what he remembers most clearly is what that success meant to the people watching from the stands.
Three successive promotions eventually carried Wrexham into the Championship, taking the club far beyond the National League days in which Mullin first made his mark. His return to the Racecourse was a reminder that, whatever comes next, that April evening in 2023 will always hold a special place in the club’s recent history.
