Wrexham forward Josh Windass may be facing a longer spell out than fans had hoped, after a supporter claimed the 32-year-old told him he’d be sidelined for a extended period. The club hasn’t confirmed the timescale, and manager Phil Parkinson has yet to set a return date.
Windass was reportedly seen wearing a protective boot at the Cae Ras during Wrexham’s 4-1 win over Preston North End on 17 October, raising concerns among supporters awaiting updates on his recovery from an ankle injury.
What the supporter said about Windass
Replying to a post about the protective boot, Wrexham fan Al Nash wrote on X: “Month at least he said at the players entrance.”
It’s important to note that this is a supporter account, not an official medical update, and there’s been no independent confirmation of a minimum one-month absence.
What is confirmed is that Windass picked up the injury during Wrexham’s 1-1 draw at Derby County on 10 October, catching his foot in the turf and being forced off after about 15 minutes.
Parkinson later told reporters, as quoted by BBC Sport:
“It’s very swollen and he’s had a scan. It’s not as serious as we first feared.”
The manager added: “He caught his foot in the ground and damaged his ligaments. Josh is going to need time for that swelling to come out of the ankle joint.”
While Parkinson’s comments were reassuring compared to the initial worry, no specific recovery timeline was given. Windass has since missed the home defeat to West Bromwich Albion and the win over Preston.
Why the absence matters for Wrexham
Windass had already missed pre-season and the early part of the campaign with a calf injury, and had made six appearances this season before the latest setback, according to BBC Sport.
His value to Parkinson’s side isn’t just about numbers. Playing off a central striker, he finds space and helps link midfield to attack, a useful option, especially when Wrexham face teams sitting deep.
The victory over Preston showed that Wrexham can find goals without him, with Joe Worrall, Ben Whiteman, Sam Smith and Kieffer Moore all scoring. Still, losing another forward during a busy Championship run is far from ideal.
Which fixtures could Windass miss?
Wrexham’s upcoming fixtures include trips to Blackburn Rovers (24 October) and Sheffield United (30 October), followed by home games against Middlesbrough (4 November) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (7 November). All of these fall within a hypothetical four-week absence measured from the date of the supporter report.
But until the club provides an official update, any timeline remains speculative. For now, fans have a supporter’s account hinting at a longer layoff, while Parkinson has confirmed ligament damage without setting a return date. The reported month-long absence should be treated as unconfirmed until further information is released.
