Wrexham could still see some movement before the transfer window closes, but Phil Parkinson’s comments make it clear that the decisions around Elliot Lee, Harry Ashfield and Aaron James aren’t all the same.
Parkinson has confirmed that there is interest in all three players, while also making it clear that Wrexham can’t afford to lose depth without considering the impact on the squad. With a busy run of fixtures ahead, he says any move has to make sense for both the club and the player involved.
“The great thing is we’ve got a lot of interest in our players.”
Ashfield and James decisions must suit Wrexham
Ashfield and James are the younger players in the equation, and Parkinson’s comments suggest Wrexham are weighing the value of greater first-team experience against keeping enough depth for the months ahead.
Ashfield, 20, spent the second half of last season on loan at Cheltenham Town after making three competitive appearances for Wrexham earlier in the campaign. He played 17 times during that loan spell, giving him another taste of regular EFL football.
James, 21, is another academy product attracting interest. The defender has made nine competitive first-team appearances for Wrexham and previously spent time on loan with Warrington Town, while injury interrupted his progress last season.
Parkinson is therefore not treating interest as an automatic reason to sanction either move.
“Harry Ashfield and Aaron James are attracting interest. But we’ve got to make sure those moves are right for us and the player. There are a lot of games coming up and I think we’ve got to make sure that we feel as a staff the squad’s strong.”
Lee’s Wrexham situation is different
Elliot Lee presents a different decision. At 31, the midfielder is at a stage where regular senior football matters immediately, and Parkinson has been far more explicit about the need to resolve his situation before the window closes.
Lee spent the second half of last season on loan at Doncaster Rovers and has not featured competitively for Wrexham this term. He has nevertheless made 152 competitive appearances and scored 41 goals since joining the club in 2022, contributing across three successive promotions.
Parkinson continues to speak warmly about Lee, describing him as a “terrific player” who has been “outstanding” for Wrexham. But he also believes Lee is “too good a player not to be playing” and says the club needs to find a situation that suits him this week.
That distinction matters. For Ashfield and James, Wrexham can weigh development opportunities against the value of retaining young depth, while Lee’s immediate need for regular football makes his situation more pressing.
The interest in all three gives Parkinson options before Tuesday’s 11pm deadline, but it also creates three separate judgements rather than one simple clear-out. Wrexham may sanction departures, but the manager’s message is that each one has to leave the squad, and the player involved, in a better position.
