Phil Parkinson expects movement out of Wrexham before the transfer window closes, but his comments on Elliot Lee make clear that any departure would not come because the manager has stopped rating a player who has played a major role in the club’s rise.
Lee is attracting interest ahead of Tuesday’s 11pm deadline, and Parkinson believes the 31-year-old needs to decide what he wants next. The Wrexham boss described him as a “terrific player” who has been “outstanding” for the club, while delivering the line that best explains the situation.
“He’s too good a player not to be playing in my eyes.”
Parkinson’s praise makes Lee situation clear
Those words matter given Lee’s contribution since arriving at Wrexham in 2022. He has made 152 competitive appearances and scored 41 goals, playing his part as the club climbed from the National League to the Championship through three successive promotions.
His influence was particularly clear during the first two promotions. Lee made 51 appearances and scored 15 times in 2022/23 before following that with 16 goals from 53 appearances as Wrexham secured promotion from League Two.
He remained heavily involved in League One, making 44 appearances and scoring nine goals during the campaign that delivered a third consecutive promotion. His situation changed significantly once Wrexham reached the Championship.
Injury contributed to that shift. Lee underwent knee surgery during the first half of last season and made only three competitive appearances for Wrexham, all in the League Cup, before joining Doncaster Rovers on loan in February.
Parkinson was supportive when that move was agreed, describing Lee as a “great player for us” while acknowledging that he needed regular minutes after his injury. Lee’s own message after arriving at Doncaster was similarly straightforward: “I want to come here and play.”
Wrexham and Lee face familiar decision
That desire for football is now at the centre of the situation again. Lee has returned to Wrexham but has not featured competitively this season, while Parkinson has confirmed there are clubs interested in him.
The manager’s latest comments carry no sense of wanting to push Lee aside. Instead, Parkinson has praised both the player and the personality, while accepting that somebody who thrives on playing needs an opportunity to do exactly that.
“He’s a terrific player who’s been outstanding for us, he really has.”
Parkinson added that Wrexham need to find somewhere for Lee this week which suits what the midfielder wants. With the transfer window closing at 11pm on Tuesday, there is now a clear timeframe for that decision.
Harry Ashfield and Aaron James are also attracting interest, although Parkinson stressed that any moves must work for Wrexham as well as the players involved. Lee’s case feels different because of his experience, his contribution to three promotions and the manager’s insistence that he should be playing.
If Lee does move on before the deadline, Parkinson’s words make the circumstances clear. It would not erase what the midfielder has achieved at Wrexham, but could instead give a player the manager still rates highly the regular football that has become difficult to find at the Racecourse.
