In a pre-friendly match on Saturday, Wrexham defeated Manchester United 1-0 in Helsinki, Finland.
Sam Smith got the only goal of the game during the 39th minute from close range off a pass from Lewis O’Brien. The game offered Wrexham a fine opportunity to take on Premier League opposition as they prepare for the upcoming season under Phil Parkinson.
Manchester United started the first half with experienced first-team players such as Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, Bryan Mbeumo and Joshua Zirkzee.
During the match, Wrexham managed to organize themselves well and put up a dominant display despite the challenge of facing a larger team. Six minutes to half time, Smith had already been threatening Manchester United’s defense.
Smith was on the end of a pass from O’Brien on the edge of the six yard box and guided the ball into the bottom corner showcasing his ability to score in key moments in front of goal.
Manchester United made changes in the second half bringing in a relatively younger line-up. The team had more of the possession and tried to press Wrexham back but Parkinson’s team held firm.
Ward ensures the clean sheet
Danny Ward had to be alert throughout the game as the Man Utd players tried to find an equalizer. Amongst the Man Utd players to test Wrexham’s defensive unit were Shea Lacey and Ethan Wheatley but the Red Dragons maintained a clean sheet in the match.
Just like the victory, Wrexham’s defensive performance was a highlight and as expected, Parkinson managed to rotate through his players during the match.
A great test for Parkinson’s squad
The result of friendlies doesn’t offer much insight about the two teams due to frequent change overs. Fitness and tactical preparation are more important compared to the match scorelines.
Nonetheless, Wrexham displayed some traits that might prove useful in the season. They have been clinical whenever they got chances, well organized in defending and capable of handling sustained pressure.
The sharp goal by Smith and calmness of Ward were two of the positive performances during the friendly match. The good performance of the defense is a sign that Wrexham can cope with technically gifted opponents.
This victory won’t determine how the season will end, but it is certainly a good sign for Wrexham going into the new season. Getting a shutout and beating Manchester United 1-0 is definitely something to celebrate.
