Wrexham have left four key players out of their initial 2026/27 Championship squad, with Phil Parkinson naming 21 senior players and keeping four spaces open.
All four are currently dealing with injuries or fitness concerns, rather than being dropped from the manager’s long-term plans. The vacancies give Wrexham room to add players as their injury situation changes.
It provides Parkinson with useful leeway during the opening months of the campaign, although the Wrexham boss has already played down any immediate move into the free-agent market.
Injuries explain Wrexham’s squad omissions
Wrexham’s submitted Championship squad contains 21 senior players, four short of the division’s 25-player limit, with several established members of Parkinson’s group currently unavailable.
George Thomason faces the longest confirmed absence. The midfielder is expected to miss around 10 weeks with a thigh injury suffered against Watford.
Liberato Cacace has also endured a difficult spell with muscle problems. Parkinson described the New Zealand international as “really, really unlucky” with his fitness.
Ben Sheaf is considerably closer to making his return, having been closing in on a comeback, while Revan is also absent from the initial senior list.
Keeping four places unused means Wrexham have not filled their Championship allocation at a time when Parkinson is waiting for several players to work their way back.
Parkinson in no rush to add free agents
The vacancies naturally raise another possibility following the closure of the summer transfer window. Wrexham could potentially look at eligible unattached players should Parkinson decide his squad requires another addition.
That does not appear to be an immediate priority. Asked about the possibility before the squad was finalised, the manager indicated he was content to work with the group already assembled.
“At the moment we’re just going to take a deep breath. We want to enjoy working with the players we’ve got.”
Parkinson’s comments, reported by the North Wales Chronicle, make the situation clearer. Four empty spaces provide flexibility, but there is no suggestion another signing is imminent.
Wrexham have room to manage injury returns
For Parkinson, the immediate value comes from retaining options during a demanding Championship campaign. Sheaf appears among those nearest to returning, whereas Thomason’s recovery will stretch further into the season.
The omissions therefore look less dramatic than the squad list initially suggests. Wrexham have four senior players missing, but also four vacant places and the breathing room to reassess the group as their injury picture improves.
