Wrexham Women have strengthened their squad ahead of the 2026/27 season after completing the signing of goalkeeper Lucy Farrell following the expiry of her contract with Stoke City. The 22-year-old arrives with experience in the English third tier and recent senior international recognition with Wales, giving Jenny Sugarman another strong option between the posts.
Farrell becomes Wrexham’s latest summer addition after making 15 appearances for Stoke City last season. She also counts Burnley, Halifax Town and Stockport County among her former clubs, having progressed through the academies of both Manchester United and Manchester City.
The move also reunites Farrell with several familiar faces. She previously played alongside current Wrexham players Maria Francis-Jones and Faye Knox during her time in the Wales youth setup, giving her a head start as she settles into her new surroundings.
Lucy Farrell explains why Wrexham was the right move
Farrell said discussions with head coach Jenny Sugarman quickly convinced her that Wrexham was the right club for the next stage of her career.
“I’m really excited. It’s such a big club.
“It seems as if no was not an answer at Wrexham for the women, which is quite refreshing. I know a lot of the girls here already and they’ve said good things.”
The goalkeeper believes she arrives in North Wales after an important season of development with Stoke.
“It’s been a really good year for me. I was on loan the year before, so that was a stepping stone, getting a few minutes.
“Then going to Stoke, I got a lot more minutes in tier three and we did quite well, came fourth. It was a good season for me all round.”
International progress adds further encouragement
Farrell’s club form was rewarded earlier this year when Rhian Wilkinson handed her a first senior Wales call-up for the Women’s World Cup qualifiers against Albania.
Reflecting on that experience, the new Wrexham goalkeeper admitted it was a significant milestone in her career.
“It was amazing. It was daunting, but amazing, and a proud moment.”
Farrell hopes joining Wrexham can help her continue progressing on the international stage.
“I think it’d be amazing. I think it’d be amazing for Wrexham and the Welsh League. So hopefully at some point in the year.”
Jenny Sugarman sees long-term potential
Sugarman believes Wrexham have secured a goalkeeper capable of making an immediate impact while continuing to develop over the coming years.
“Lucy is a top goalkeeper with excellent experience both at club and international level at such a young age and I have tracked her progress for a while now.
“Having represented both Burnley and Stoke City in tier three in England, and her recent call-up to the Welsh national team, she is both a player for now and the future.
“Lucy is an excellent shot stopper and very comfortable playing out with the ball at her feet. She is an exciting addition to our goalkeeping department and I’m looking forward to seeing how Lucy continues to develop with us.”
Farrell also revealed she had already spoken to Francis-Jones and Knox before completing the move, with both players giving positive feedback about the club.
“I’ve asked for their advice and they’re just nothing but good things, so it’ll be good to get back with them.”
With experience in the English third tier, senior international recognition and strong recommendations from existing teammates, Farrell arrives at Wrexham hoping to continue her own development while helping the club build on its recent progress.
