Wrexham’s former head coach, Andy Morrell, has said that Jovon Makama, the Norwich City striker, will be a perfect player for Phil Parkinson to target in the summer transfer window because the 22-year-old is akin to Kieffer Moore.
There have been no signs of any move from Wrexham for Makama yet, but his selection is in tune with their need to introduce youth, pace, and strength among an experienced line-up of forwards.
In the 2025/26 Championship season, the 22-year-old netted 10 goals in 28 games for Norwich. He is contracted at Carrow Road until June 2028, with Norwich having an option to keep him until 2030.
Morrell sees the right profile
Discussing potential Wrexham targets, Morrell pointed to Makama’s combination of size, athleticism and movement as a strong fit for Parkinson’s squad.
“I really like Makama at Norwich. He has a bit of everything and I think that sort of profile is somebody that we should be looking at, a mobile, bigger lad,” Morrell told the Daily Star.
“I thought he had pace and he made good runs.”
Makama is primarily a centre-forward but can also operate from the right. His pace, strength and movement made him one of Norwich’s more effective young attackers last season.
Morrell believes that profile could provide a younger alternative to Kieffer Moore.
“He’s going to be looking at the next level and he’s going to cost a lot of money. I think Phil Parkinson might be looking at a younger version of Kieffer Moore.”
The club already has both Moore and Sam Smith as centre-forwards, and Nathan Broadhead is capable of playing anywhere upfront. This means that the case for signing another striker is more to do with balance and replacement than filling an obvious need.
Morrell also stressed that Wrexham must identify value rather than attempt to outbid clubs benefiting from Premier League parachute payments.
“Financially, I don’t think we’re going to be able to compete with them at the moment, so you’ve got to find the value.
“We’ve got to be realistic, but by reaching further, you’re getting more value if you can find the right players.”
That would be in line with Wrexham’s transfer policy, having just completed their first Championship campaign in seventh position, two points shy of the play-offs. The club has invested heavily in the past summer, and this time, they may well seek specific upgrades.
Recruitment structure still matters
Wrexham have also been associated with former Newcastle United recruitment director Steve Nickson in order to bolster their scouting network. It has been claimed that an agreement is imminent, although the signing of Steve Nickson was yet to be confirmed on 23 July 2026.
The signing has already been hailed as a major off-the-pitch recruitment for Wrexham, who are now seeking to expand their search from the domestic front.
There are other squad gaps to address. Issa Kaboré’s loan has ended, leaving right wing-back among the areas identified for reinforcement alongside the attack.
Morrell’s Makama suggestion remains a recommendation rather than evidence of transfer activity. Even so, the logic is clear: Wrexham need younger players with Championship output, physical presence and room to develop if they are to improve on seventh place.
