Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has warned that transfer business could take longer than usual this summer, as the Reds begin pre-season preparations for the 2026-27 Championship campaign during a market slowed by the World Cup.
Wrexham have earned the right to approach this window with care. They finished seventh last season, two points outside the Championship play-offs, after their first campaign in the second tier for 43 years.
That near miss matters now. Parkinson wants additions, but his latest message is that timing will be shaped by a market that is not moving quickly.
The key point for supporters is simple. Wrexham are working, but they are not being pushed into early decisions for the sake of movement.
Phil Parkinson expects Wrexham transfer decisions to take time
The Phil Parkinson era has been built on clear recruitment calls and steady squad development.
Speaking to LeaderLive, Parkinson said:
“The World Cup always slows down elements of the market and we are expecting that will be the same.
“I am not anticipating a lot of movement in the next few weeks.”
That view fits the wider summer picture. The Athletic has outlined how the World Cup has helped create a slower market, with clubs and agents waiting for decisions to move through the chain.
For Wrexham, that makes patience logical rather than passive. Parkinson said the work at this stage can be unseen because it involves speaking to agents and players, and making sure the club stay close to targets.
Wrexham already have a squad Parkinson trusts
Parkinson has not presented delay as a problem. He has framed it around confidence in the group already in place at the Racecourse Stadium.
He said Wrexham have “got a good squad to go into pre-season with” and added that the club have “got a strong squad” when looking at the players due back for pre-season.
“A lot of that improvement I feel will come within the existing group. I think there is more to come from the group we have got and that is really important.
“I think we will improve anyway with the lads we have got and if we can add to that as well, that is obviously the aim.”
That is the most encouraging part of his update. Wrexham are not starting again after a heavy rebuild, and that should give the coaching staff more time to sharpen detail rather than repeat last summer’s reset.
BBC Sport has also described Wrexham’s 2026-27 transfer plan as evolution rather than revolution, which matches Parkinson’s tone.
Recruitment still matters after Wrexham’s near miss
There is no sense that Wrexham are standing still. Parkinson has confirmed that the club know the areas they want to strengthen.
The context remains important. Parkinson led Wrexham through three successive promotions before the club became a genuine Championship contender.
That rise was built on timing, recruitment and trust in a core group. The same principles appear to be shaping this window.
Wrexham may have to wait for key transfer decisions this summer, but Parkinson’s comments should not be read as hesitation.
They point to a club with a plan, a stronger base than 12 months ago, and a manager who believes there is already more to come from the players in the building.
