Wrexham legend Elliot Lee future confirmed after late transfer twist

From the National League to the Championship. Parky has made his decision on Lee...
Andrew Pargh September 1, 2026 (Last updated: September 1, 2026)

Elliot Lee is set to leave Wrexham on Tuesday, 1 September, with the midfielder reportedly agreeing a mutual termination of his contract at the Cae Ras and Sheffield Wednesday among the clubs interested in signing him. The proposed departure would bring down the curtain on a remarkable four-year spell for a player who helped carry Wrexham from the National League to the Championship.

Rich Fay reported that Lee has agreed to end his Wrexham contract and will become a free agent, although the club have not yet formally announced his departure. Sheffield Wednesday are among those interested, but there is no agreement with the League One side at this stage.

For Wrexham supporters, the bigger story is the imminent end of an era. Lee arrived in 2022 and became one of the defining players of the club’s extraordinary rise through the divisions.

Elliot Lee set for Wrexham exit

Rich Fay reported on Tuesday that Lee is set to leave as a free agent following an agreement to terminate his contract mutually.

Football League World subsequently reported Sheffield Wednesday’s interest in the 31-year-old.

The distinction is important. Wrexham have not yet confirmed the termination through official club channels, so Lee remains set to depart rather than officially released at the time of writing.

His route away from the first team had already become clear last season. Wrexham confirmed Lee’s loan move to Doncaster Rovers on 2 February after he sought regular football, and he went on to make 18 appearances and score three goals during his spell in League One.

Lee leaves behind an extraordinary Wrexham legacy

Whatever happens next, Lee’s place in modern Wrexham history is secure. The midfielder made 152 competitive appearances and scored 41 goals for the club.

His story began in unforgettable fashion with two goals from the bench on his debut against Eastleigh in August 2022. By the end of that campaign, Wrexham had collected 111 points, won the National League title and finally returned to the EFL.

Lee then scored 16 league goals as Parkinson’s side won another promotion from League Two. A year later he was part of the group that completed a third successive promotion, taking Wrexham into the Championship in 2025.

Those achievements explain why this departure carries more weight than a routine squad change. Lee was there for the climb, produced decisive moments along the way and became closely associated with one of the greatest periods in the club’s history.

Sheffield Wednesday could offer Lee his next chapter

Wednesday’s interest offers one possible route forward once Lee’s release becomes official. Because he is set to become a free agent, his next move can be completed after the transfer deadline.

There is no confirmed agreement with the Owls, so the next destination remains unresolved. What appears far clearer is that Lee’s Wrexham chapter is approaching its conclusion after four extraordinary years.

If this is the end, Lee leaves the Cae Ras as a three-time promotion winner whose contribution to Wrexham’s rise will not be forgotten.
