Wrexham supporters have made Arthur Okonkwo their preferred No.1 goalkeeper for next season after a RobRyanRed poll on 4 June showed clear backing for the Nigerian international.
It is a decision that could shape the summer as Wrexham AFC prepare for another Championship campaign under Phil Parkinson.
We know that Okonkwo signed permanently from Arsenal in 2024, with his deal running until 30 June 2027. That means this is more than a simple selection call. Wrexham must decide whether Okonkwo is the long-term answer, or whether the position needs fresh investment.

A RobRyanRed poll asked who should be Wrexham’s No.1 goalkeeper next season.
Okonkwo received 57 per cent of the vote. A further 40 per cent wanted Wrexham to sign someone new, while just 3 per cent selected Danny Ward.
That is a strong show of faith in Okonkwo. It is not overwhelming, though, because a sizeable section of supporters still want the club to raise the level in goal.
On the RobRyanRed podcast, Nathan Salt summed up the debate by saying:
“If you believe Arthur’s your guy for the long term, what are you waiting for?”
The numbers show why the debate is not simple
Records show Okonkwo with a 67.9 per cent save rate, nine clean sheets and 53.2 per cent pass accuracy in the Championship last season.
Those figures give a balanced picture. He handled a heavy workload, but the debate around consistency and distribution has not disappeared.
Ward’s season was disrupted by injury, but his save rate was 67.6 per cent from a much smaller sample of eight league starts.
That explains why Parkinson had a real decision late in the campaign. It also explains why supporters remain split between loyalty to Okonkwo and the idea of a new arrival.
Phil Parkinson has already praised Okonkwo’s progress
Parkinson has spoken positively about Okonkwo before. BBC Sport quoted him as saying the goalkeeper was “improving all the time”.
That matters because Parkinson has seen both sides of the argument from close range. He has seen the saves, the progress, the pressure moments and the mistakes.
Ward still has clear value after Wrexham AFC confirmed his return on a two-year deal in 2025.
Yet the poll suggests supporters do not see Ward as the obvious long-term No.1. They appear to view him more as competition, cover or a short-term option.
External links make the decision feel sharper
The debate has grown because Wrexham have been linked with Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.
BBC Sport has carried the transfer link, while Sky Sports reporting has also placed Wrexham among the clubs interested.
Patterson would not be a small move. Reports have placed Sunderland’s valuation in the £8 million to £10 million range.
That makes the Okonkwo decision feel sharper. If Wrexham sign a new No.1, the pathway changes immediately.
If they do not, then clarity around Okonkwo becomes important. A goalkeeper entering a promotion push needs trust, authority and a defined role.
Wrexham have options. What they cannot afford is uncertainty in a position where small margins often decide Championship seasons.
The poll shows supporters still believe in Okonkwo. Wrexham now have to decide how strongly they believe in him too.
