Wrexham AFC have emerged as the bookmakers’ favourites to sign Jamie Vardy on transfer deadline day, Tuesday 1 September, following reports that the Championship club have made an approach for the free-agent striker.
This is more than another name appearing in the betting market. Wrexham have reportedly explored a deal for the 39-year-old, who remains without a club following his departure from Italian side Cremonese.
There is no suggestion that Vardy has agreed to move to the STōK Cae Ras. Even so, Wrexham entering the race for one of the most recognisable strikers of his generation makes for quite the deadline day development.
Wrexham make Jamie Vardy approach
talkSPORT report that Wrexham have made a surprise approach for the former Leicester City striker, with several clubs interested in securing his signature.
The market quickly reacted. The Leader reported that Betfair moved Wrexham to Evens to land Vardy, ahead of boyhood club Sheffield Wednesday at 11/8 and West Ham at 4/1.
“With transfer deadline day now underway, Wrexham have emerged as the new frontrunners to sign Jamie Vardy.”
Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom also pointed out that Wednesday had previously been as short as 4/5. It is a sharp change in the market, although betting odds should not be mistaken for confirmation that a deal is close.
Jamie Vardy has no plans to stop playing
Vardy has already made his intentions clear when it comes to retirement. Discussing his future following the end of his remarkable Leicester career, he told BBC Sport: “This isn’t retirement. I want to keep on playing and doing what I enjoy most – scoring goals.”
He did exactly that in Italy. The veteran scored seven times in 29 Serie A appearances for Cremonese during 2025/26 before leaving the club following their relegation.
His CV hardly needs dressing up. Vardy scored 145 Premier League goals for Leicester, lifted the title in 2015/16, claimed the Premier League Golden Boot four years later and won 26 England caps.
That is a level of experience rarely available on a free transfer. At 39, the question for any interested club is naturally what Vardy can still offer on the pitch, but seven goals in Serie A last season suggests there is still something left in the tank.
Wrexham have time on their side
There is another important detail here. Vardy is a free agent, so Wrexham do not need to rush a potential agreement through before the deadline for transfers involving contracted players.
That leaves Vardy free to consider his options, with Wednesday and West Ham also among those linked. From Wrexham’s perspective, the significant development is that their interest has now been reported as an approach rather than simply bookmaker speculation.
There is still some distance between making an approach and seeing Vardy holding a Wrexham shirt, but the Reds have put themselves firmly into a fascinating race for his signature.
