Wrexham defender Zak Vyner is preparing for his first pre-season tour of the United States, with Phil Parkinson’s side facing Leeds United in Tampa on 25 July before matches against Liverpool in New York and Sunderland in Pennsylvania.
The trip will give Vyner his first close look at the scale of Wrexham’s American support. It will also provide three important opportunities to strengthen his case before the Championship campaign begins.
Wrexham travel in encouraging shape after drawing 0-0 with Wisla Krakow and earning a 1-0 Manchester United victory in Helsinki. Sam Smith scored the winner after Lewis O’Brien delivered the cross.
Vyner has already experienced the passion surrounding the club in North Wales. The defender expects the United States tour to offer something different.
Speaking to Leader Live, he said he was excited to experience that support at close quarters.
“I haven’t seen it first-hand yet, so I’m really excited. The lads say America is 10 times that so it’ll be an eye-opener, but it’ll be good fun.”
The schedule starts against Leeds before Wrexham meet Liverpool at Yankee Stadium on 29 July.
Parkinson has selected a strong 28-man tour squad. That depth should make every training session and friendly meaningful.
Competition for places comes into focus
Vyner transferred from Bristol City to Wrexham in February 2026, signing a contract until 2029, as per the Wrexham AFC official announcement. The summer provides him with an opportunity for his first full preparation under Parkinson and his team.
His message is clear. He wants to use the tour to force a difficult decision before competitive football returns.
“These tours, pre-season in general, is for everyone to essentially give the manager a headache and I’m looking to do that.”
That approach should appeal to Phil Parkinson. Wrexham will need competition and depth across another demanding Championship season.
Leeds, Liverpool and Sunderland will present three different challenges. Wrexham will need sharp organisation, physical intensity and composure against opponents capable of punishing mistakes.
The club’s United States return also has wider value. It gives overseas supporters another chance to see the team while allowing Parkinson to test combinations before the league starts.
The victory in Helsinki provided a useful platform, with Smith’s goal and a clean sheet offering clear positives.
Vyner now has the stage he wanted. A productive tour would strengthen his position and help Wrexham return home with greater clarity before another demanding Championship campaign.
